Facebook announces new 'Graph Search' tools in potential challenge to Google

MENLO PARK -- Facebook revealed a new search function Tuesday that will let its 1 billion users scour the social network for photos and information, while providing the company with lucrative new ways to sell advertising and a powerful weapon to challenge the Internet dominance of its much larger rival, Google (GOOG).

While the new "Graph Search" function is limited to searching within the social network, it goes beyond Facebook's earlier search tools and lets the company deliver more useful results from its

vast stockpile of photos, updates and other data about users and their friends -- especially their likes and recommendations.

Demonstrating the new tool for reporters at Facebook's headquarters, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said several times that it's an "early stage" product whose focus is limited -- for now. But he couldn't resist adding: "This is one of the coolest things that we've done in a while."

And while the company said it has no immediate plans for making money from the new tool, industry experts said it represents a major step in Facebook's efforts to compete with other online ad platforms, from industry giant Google to small but growing companies like Yelp,

Foursquare and LinkedIn.

"It's the first real shot in the search war between Facebook and Google," said Chris Winfield, co-founder of online marketing agency BlueGlass Interactive.

Google has also been expanding its ability to deliver ads based on users' location and friends' recommendations, Winfield noted. But Google's social network, Google+, is much smaller than Facebook and Google's search engine has no access to most of Facebook's network.

Mountain View-based Google currently dominates the search advertising business, garnering nearly 75 percent of the $17.6 billion worth of search ads sold in the United States last year, according to research firm eMarketer. Facebook brought in about $4.2 billion in ad sales last year, mostly by targeting users' likes rather than specific search queries.

Facebook's new service could "change the way people think about search," predicted Brian Blau, an analyst for the Gartner tech research firm. He added: "You know Facebook will figure out how to monetize this."

For now, the new tool will let Facebook users search for results in four categories, which the company has dubbed "photos, people, places and interests." Users can refine or narrow their searches in a variety of ways -- for example, they can type in a request for photos of a certain person, or pictures that were taken in a certain city or year. They can ask for a list of Facebook friends who like "Game of Thrones" or a list of restaurants that are liked by friends in San Francisco who lived previously in India.

Anticipating privacy concerns, Zuckerberg said Graph Search will show only information that has been posted publicly or shared with the person who is doing the search. But he and other Facebook officials acknowledged the new search tool makes it all the more important for users to check their privacy settings for everything they post.

At least some users may still be alarmed at learning their posts and photos can be searched

by anyone. Inevitably, said Blau,"there will be some surprises."

Facebook is offering the new tool to just a few thousand users initially, so the company can gather feedback before expanding the program.

Each user will see different results, depending on what their friends have chosen to share with them, Zuckerberg said. In addition, Facebook has developed algorithms to rank the results -- so users will see the "best" available photos first, as determined by the number of likes and comments they have previously received.

Facebook's algorithms also try to factor in how "close" the searcher is to other people, by giving a higher value to results from people with whom the searcher frequently interacts on Facebook.

Those features make the new search tool extremely useful, at least for Facebook members whose friends post prolifically on the network, said Rebecca Lieb, an industry analyst with the Altimeter Group. She said it will let Facebook members pick the most useful information from among the torrent of posts and updates that appear in their regular newsfeed.

While the company did not announce plans for selling new ads, Lieb said that's likely to come. "If you search for hotels in Barcelona, or coffee shops in Barcelona, or romantic restaurants in Barcelona," she added, "then I think we can safely say that Facebook might eventually draw some conclusions and push certain ads to you, in the same way that Google and Yahoo (YHOO) do."

Zuckerberg said that Facebook's new service should be viewed differently from traditional Web search. But he also announced an expanded partnership with Microsoft, whose Bing search engine will provide results from the Web for users who want to search beyond the social network, while they're on Facebook.

Analysts say companies like Facebook and Google are increasingly trying to meet a variety of needs, so users won't stray to rival sites.

'Superomniphobic' material shrugs off oil, blood, acid and more

6 hrs.

Even the nicest water-resistant materials, from synthetics to waxed canvas, can be ruined by certain liquids?that soak right in while rain and coffee?roll off. Scientists at the University of Michigan have created a surface that repels not just everyday fluids but exotic and dangerous ones.

The "superomniphobic" material works by reducing the amount of surface that's exposed to any given liquid it encounters, meaning that that liquid's surface tension (which keeps its together in a droplet or stream) remains intact.

A series of short videos accompanies the?article in the Journal of the?American Chemical Society, demonstrating the various ways in which liquid refuses to interact with the superomniphobic surface. Droplets bounce and roll across the surface, streams richochet off, and hydrochloric acid has no corrosive effect. Even "non-Newtonian" fluids like blood and shampoo, famously difficult to stop from soaking and staining, have been tamed.

Anish Tuteja, lead researcher on the project, and his colleagues have been working on similar omniphobic surfaces?for over five years, but this one is the best by far, he told NBC News.

"On the first generations, the droplets were leaving something behind," he said ? a problem around hazardous materials that could cause trouble later by evaporating or falling off. Not any more.

Yet it can't be totally impermeable. "It's a very, very porous coating ? porous to anything that's gas-based, but not to anything liquid." That means ordinary air and water vapor can pass through ? helpful when you don't want your clothing to stifle you.

The researchers achieved this balance by allowing much of the coating to be air ? in fact, between 95 and 98 percent of its?surface area. Up close, it appears like a loosely woven mat. Look closer, and the fibers begin to appear spiky.

When a droplet of water comes into contact with the surface, it's basically balanced on the tips of those spikes, with vast spaces of air in between. They don't overcome?the liquid's?surface tension, meaning the droplet keeps its shape and bounces or rolls along.

The spaces are big enough to allow air to breathe through, but small enough that neither oil, water, or acid will have enough contact to soak through. It's like a tennis ball on a net ? the net is light enough to see through, but the ball will bounce right off. If the spaces were much bigger, the ball would go through, and if they were much smaller, you wouldn't be able to see.

The work's not done, Tuteja said. Although he has "three or four" parties?interested in this type of material, not least of which is the military (which partially funded the research), there are still improvements to be made.?

"We definitely need to improve the mechanical durability, increasing the number of washing cycles, and so on," he said. A rather pedestrian concern for a leader in the field, but it's what needs to be done to get the superomniphobic material out of the lab and onto our coats and shoes.

Presidential inaugurations, the second time around

Presidents who had a second go-around George Washington (1793) "I am again called upon by the voice of my country to execute the functions of its Chief Magistrate. When the occasion proper for it shall arrive, I shall endeavor to express the high sense I entertain of this distinguished honor, and of the confidence which has been reposed in me by the people of united America..." and about 76 more words. Thomas Jefferson (1805) Thomas Jefferson had his first inauguration in the new capital city, Washington, but his second had some new musical accompaniment: The Marine Band has performed unfailingly at every inauguration since 1805. James Madison (1813) Tradition has it that the chief justice administer the swearing-in. John Roberts fumbled the oath with Obama, but that was better than John Marshall reportedly smirk[ing] throughout the ceremony." James Monroe (1821) The ceremony was supposed to take place indoors, but bickering between the Senate and the House over "what chairs would be used" sent the whole affair outdoors. Andrew Jackson (1833) He took the oath ? the ninth and last administered by John Marshall?but the hero of the Battle of New Orleans was too sick to attend the parties. Abraham Lincoln (1865) African Americans marched in the Inaugural parade for the first time. A rare photograph of Lincoln giving a speech comes from this occasion. Look closely: Some claim his would-be assassin, John Wilkes Booth, can be espied in the crowd. Ulysses S. Grant (1873) Some historians dub his second speech as "petulant" and full of self-pity, given as it was following a term beset by scandals. The day was so cold (16 degrees), that the 100 canaries meant to chirp cheerily actually froze to death. Grover Cleveland (1893) Cleveland, also known as Big Steve and Uncle Jumbo, remains the only president to serve non-consecutive terms. Benjamin Harrison, grandson of President William Harrison, beat him and lost to him. William McKinley (1901) His inauguration was the first to be in a motion picture. Six months later, anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot the president, who died 8 days later of gangrene from the bullet. Theodore Roosevelt (1905) The most inclusive celebration to date, attendees included "cowboys, Indians (including the Apache Chief Geronimo), coal miners, soldiers, and students..." Woodrow Wilson (1917) No party hound, he. Wilson cancelled the ball ? the first time since 1853, because he didn't think such an occasion warranted such frivolity. However, the Inaugural parade went on, and women participated for the first time. Calvin Coolidge (1925) Radio had become the new mass medium, and his voice was the first to be broadcast for such an event. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1937, 1941, 1945) Barring Washington, preceding inaugurations had been held in March to avoid winter weather. The 20th Amendment however changed the date to January 20, and FDR's second term honored that date. Harry S. Truman (1949) Now television was the new medium, and his parade was the first broadcast on transmitted this newfangled machine. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1957) The Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies Act had passed in 1956, setting the standard for all future shindigs. Presidents traditionally kissed the Bible after oath. Eisenhower bypassed the buss and instead said a prayer. Richard Nixon (1973) An open-top limo can be an invitation to pigeon poop, something Nixon nixed. So a chemical bird repellent called "Roost No Moore" was applied on trees ? at the cost of $13,000 ? along the route. Rather than make their claws itch, the birds ate the repellent and their corpses littered Pennsylvania Avenue. Ronald Reagan (1985) Ronald Reagan, whose best roles may have been astride a horse, wanted horses in the parade, and a city crew was assigned to follow the 730 equine participants to clean up their leavings. But, sub-zero temperatures cancelled the event, and left 12,000 marchers with no where to go ? except somewhere warm indoors. William J. Clinton (1997) The last inauguration of the 20th century, the theme was "An American Journey: Building a Bridge to the 21st Century." The Independent reported that inauguration souvenirs included 2-foot statuettes of Clinton holding a saxophone ? a steal at $75. George W. Bush (2005) In a post 9/11 landscape, sharpshooters, bomb-sniffing dogs, and about 13,000 troops were deployed for President Bush's inauguration, which contributed to the $157 million price tag, attended by 400,000 spectators. Barack Obama (2013) The president will likely not repeat his record attendance numbers of 1.8 million (the last record had been held by Johnson in 1965). He may still draw between 600,000 and 800,000 ? nearly double that of Bush or Clinton.

Troops in Madagascar last weekend freed nearly 200 employees of Rio Tinto who were trapped inside by a mine by local people protesting the project, reports AFP.

Soldiers, police and paratroopers launched an early morning raid on Saturday, three days after the protest started. Tear gas was used to disperse them. No serious injuries were reported.

The demonstrators were protesting the low prices Rio Tinto's QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) paid to acquire their land. They also demanded more locals be hired at the ilmenite mine in southern Madagascar.

"The land dispute has raged since the Anglo-Australian mining giant set up shop in the Indian Ocean island state," reported AFP. "Locals accuse the company of paying as little as 100 ariary ($0.04 or 0.03 euro) per square kilometer of land."

However a Malagasy court dismissed the complaint last year.

Rio Tinto's mining operation has brought vast amounts of investment to an impoverished region, but the project hasn't been without complaint. Prior to the start of the project, environmentalists warned the mine would destroy endangered coastal habitat, while others feared the project would drive up land prices, making it more difficult for poor farmers to feed themselves.

Southern Madagascar is thought to have ten percent of the world's exploitable ilmenite deposits.

(AP) ? Japan's two biggest airlines grounded all their Boeing 787 aircraft for safety checks Wednesday after one was forced to make an emergency landing in the latest blow for the new jet.

All Nippon Airways said a cockpit message showed battery problems and a burning smell were detected in the cockpit and the cabin, forcing the 787 on a domestic flight to land at Takamatsu airport in western Japan.

The 787, known as the Dreamliner, is Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced jet, and the company is counting heavily on its success. Since its launch, which came after delays of more than three years, the plane has been plagued by a series of problems including a battery fire and fuel leaks. Japan's ANA and Japan Airlines are major customers for the jet and among the first to fly it.

Japan's transport ministry said it got notices from ANA, which operates 17 of the jets, and Japan Airlines which has seven, that all their 787s would not be flying. The grounding was done voluntarily by the airlines.

The earliest manufactured jets of any new aircraft usually have problems and airlines run higher risks in flying them first, said Brendan Sobie, Singapore-based chief analyst at CAPA-Center for Aviation. Since about half the 787 fleet is in Japan, more problems are cropping up there.

"There are always teething problems with new aircraft and airlines often are reluctant to be the launch customer of any new airplanes," Sobie said. "We saw it with other airplane types, like the A380 but the issues with the A380 were different," he said.

Japan's transport ministry categorized Wednesday's problem as a "serious incident" that could have led to an accident, and sent officials for further checks to Takamatsu airport. The airport was closed.

ANA executives apologized, bowing deeply at a hastily called news conference in Tokyo.

"We are very sorry to have caused passengers and their family members so much concern," said ANA Senior Executive Vice President Osamu Shinobe.

One male in his 60s was taken to the hospital for minor hip injuries after going down the emergency slides at the airport, the fire department said. The other 128 passengers and eight crew members of the ANA domestic flight were uninjured, according to ANA.

The grounding in Japan was the first for the 787, whose problems had been brushed off by Boeing as teething pains for a new aircraft. The transport ministry had already started a separate inspection Monday on another 787 jet, operated by Japan Airlines, which had leaked fuel at Tokyo's Narita airport after flying back from Boston, where it had also leaked fuel.

A fire ignited Jan. 7 in the battery pack of an auxiliary power unit of a Japan Airlines 787 empty of passengers as the plane sat on the tarmac at Boston's Logan International Airport. It took firefighters 40 minutes to put out the blaze.

ANA cancelled a domestic flight to Tokyo on Jan. 9 after a computer wrongly indicated there was a problem with the Boeing 787's brakes. Two days later, the carrier reported two new cases of problems with the aircraft ? a minor fuel leak and a cracked windscreen in a 787 cockpit.

The 787 relies more than any other modern airliner on electrical signals to help power nearly everything the plane does. It's also the first Boeing plane to use rechargeable lithium ion batteries, which charge faster and can be molded to space-saving shapes compared to other airplane batteries. The plane is made with lightweight composite materials instead of aluminum.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that it is "monitoring a preliminary report of an incident in Japan earlier today involving a Boeing 787."

It said the incident will be included in the comprehensive review the FAA began last week of the 787 critical systems, including design, manufacture and assembly. U.S. government officials have been quick to say that the plane is safe. Nearly 50 of them are in the skies now.

GS Yuasa Corp., the Japanese company that supplies all the lithium ion batteries for the 787, had no comment as the investigation was still ongoing.

In Tokyo, the transport minister, Akihiro Ota, said authorities were taking the incidents seriously.

"These problems must be fully investigated," he said.

Boeing has said that various technical problems are to be expected in the early days of any aircraft model.

"Boeing is aware of the diversion of a 787 operated by ANA to Takamatsu in western Japan. We will be working with our customer and the appropriate regulatory agencies," Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is aware of Wednesday's emergency landing in Japan and is gathering information on the incident, Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for the board, said.

In Wednesday's incident, a cockpit instrument showed a problem with the 787's battery and the pilot noticed an unusual smell, the airline said. The flight requested and was granted permission to make an emergency landing at Takamatsu airport.

Aviation safety expert John Goglia, a former National Transportation Safety Board member, said the ANA pilot made the right choice.

"They were being very prudent in making the emergency landing even though there's been no information released so far that indicates any of these issues are related," he said.

But much remains uncertain about the problems being experienced by the 787, said Masaharu Hirokane, analyst at Nomura Securities Co. in Tokyo.

The problems could turn out to be relatively easy to fix, or it could be major, and the situation was still unclear, including how long the improvements would take, he said.

"You need to ensure safety 100 percent, and then you also have to get people to feel that the jet is 100 percent safe," said Hirokane.

Zuckerberg Unveils Facebook's New 'Graph Search' Function for Social Data

Clad in his uniform of hoodie and jeans, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stood before hundreds of reporters and bloggers on Tuesday to announce the social network giant's new comprehensive search function.

"Graph Search," contained in a large bar at the top of the page, will allow users to search specific, private information Facebook friends have shared with them. (http://live.cnet.com/Event/Facebook_unveils_what_its_building?Page=5)

Zuckerberg used examples to show how users can do searches. Searching "my friends who live in Palo Alto, Calif., and like 'Game of Thrones,'" for instance, pulled up top users who live in that area and have posted about the television show or "Liked" it on Facebook. Similarly, searching "Photos of me and Priscilla Chan" pulled up photos of Zuckerberg and his wife.

There are also filters to fill out the search if desired results aren't pulled up, such as location, age, or university.

The development will make searching more intuitive, Zuckerberg said.

Aware that many would be concerned, Zuckerberg said the search function is sensitive to privacy, limiting them only to the information friends share. Users can easily adjust what they share with friends using the privacy settings in the upper righthand corner.

"Nothing is visible that wasn't visible before," Zuckerberg said.

Facebook's partnership with Bing, owned by Microsoft, previously allowed users to pull up general web search results, like "weather in Menlo Park." This capability still exists, in addition to the Graph Search.

Asked if the company considered developing the function with Google, Zuckerberg said the search engine giant wasn't able to do what Facebook wanted in terms of privacy control. Rather, he said, the relationship with Microsoft helped make the search function possible.

The search function takes on several big networking websites. Facebook will stay competitive with LinkedIn; recruiters can search things like "people who have been product managers and who have been founders" and it pulls up a list of such people.

It also keeps Facebook competitive with Yelp, as users can find out their friends' favorite restaurants or doctors in the area. Searching "Singles in Palo Alto" yields results that could make people opt for Facebook over Match.com or other dating websites.

Currently, there are a few minor tech bugs engineers are ironing out. Tuesday's rollout Zuckerberg referred to as a beta product, takes effect for only a few hundred thousand and is in English only. There are currently 1 billion active users on Facebook.

Eventually, the search function will be available on the mobile application as well.

Asked if the Graph Search would be monetized, Zuckerberg said not yet.

"For now, we're focused on user experience," Zuckerberg said. "Facebook has had sponsored search results for a while. That extends nicely for this, but it hasn't added anything new for this."

The announcement comes a week after an event was posted on the social networking website that cryptically said "come see what we're building."

Journalists and bloggers had a number of predictions about what the announcement could be, from a Facebook smartphone that would keep the social network competitive with Google's Android to new privacy settings.

Facebook's tease was enough to add another 9 percent last week to the stock, technology blog CNet reports. It was already in a months-long rebound from its $17.55 September trough. Facebook went public at $38 a share.

Egypt's president visits train crash survivors

BADRASHEEN, Egypt (AP) ? Egypt's president has visited survivors of Egypt's latest train wreck, which killed 19 soldiers and injured more than 100 others.

Mohammed Morsi pledged to hold officials accountable for the wreck. Witnesses said the last carriage of the train carrying more than 1,000 recruits disconnected, jumped the tracks and crashed into another train.

A military helicopter hovered over the scene Tuesday, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Cairo, and Prime Minister Hesham Kandil inspected the damage.

In office just six months, Morsi's government is already taking criticism over its handling of domestic affairs.

Train wrecks and other transportation disasters are common in Egypt because of outdated infrastructure, faulty maintenance and corruption.

The crash early Tuesday came two months after 50 children died when a train crushed their bus in southern Egypt.

Northern Irish court quashes conviction for soldiers' killing

BELFAST (Reuters) - A Northern Ireland court on Tuesday quashed the conviction of the only man jailed over the 2009 murder of two British soldiers outside an army base in Northern Ireland.

Brian Shivers was found guilty last year of being involved in the killing of Patrick Azimkar, 21, and Mark Quinsey, 23, outside the Massereene Barracks in Antrim as they collected a pizza hours before they were due to fly to Afghanistan.

The judge at the time ruled Shivers had set fire to the murderers' getaway car - and that was enough to show he had been involved in the plot to kill the soldiers and was therefore legally responsible for their murders.

He was given a life sentence.

But the Court of Appeal overturned that decision on Tuesday saying Shivers' act was not enough to convict him of murder.

"The Court did not accept that a person who provides assistance after a murder with full knowledge of what has happened becomes guilty of murder," the court of appeal ruling said.

Shivers, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, had denied involvement. He will remain in custody until the Public Prosecution Service decides whether to seek a retrial.

The shooting was one of the worst attacks in the British-controlled province since a 1998 peace deal largely ended 30 years of conflict between Catholic Irish nationalists seeking union with Ireland and Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom.

The Real IRA, which broke from the Irish Republican Army after the peace deal, has claimed responsibility for the killings.

The appeals court quashed Shivers' conviction on two counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and one of possession of two firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

House Democrats want to repeal debt ceiling

(AP) ? House Democrats are pushing legislation to repeal the federal debt ceiling, saying the borrowing limit has no practical purpose and has come to be used for political maneuvering that can have devastating economic repercussions.

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler said the debt ceiling is arbitrary, doesn't affect the deficit and has become a Republican means to "blackmail" the country to advance the GOP's political agenda.

President Barack Obama earlier this week said he would not negotiate with Republicans over the debt ceiling, saying talks on spending cuts should be separate from raising the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling and averting a possible first-ever national default.

The debt ceiling has been in place since 1939. The Treasury says it will run out of borrowing power in mid-February to early March.

If your teenage daughter was sexually active and wanted to go on the pill, you?d want to know, right? Well, think back to when you were her age ? would you have told your parents?

These questions were the subject of a recent?Melbourne study of parental views?of adolescent?s right to confidential health care.

The study, which took place in a specialist Adolescent Medicine clinic, found the majority of parents surveyed (86%) believed they should be informed by their adolescent?s treating health professional about their health problems and behaviours, regardless of whether their child agreed.

For clinicians, confidential care underpins best practice in adolescent health. But so does working with parents and families to support young people who have health problems.

These seemingly opposite approaches raise a number of ethical, legal and health-care issues for health professionals who treat young people.

    Legal framework

In Australia, confidential health care is a human right enshrined in law. And medical practitioners can be sued for breaching patient confidentiality.

There are many exceptions to this, such as a patient giving permission for their information to be shared ? with partners, parents or family members ? or when a person is deemed at serious risk of harm to themselves or others.

If a child under 16 years is considered to be at risk of harm then health professionals are mandated by law to notify child protection authorities (except Western Australia, where health professionals are only required to report sexual abuse).

The definition of ?risk of harm? varies between jurisdictions, as does the classification of who constitutes a ?mandatory reporter?.

While there are many other legal exemptions to confidential health care, these are the most pertinent in the day-to-day clinical care of adolescent patients.

confidential 290x338 Should parents have access to teens medical records?

?A teenager who sits in a consulting room with his or her doctor can rely on their doctor to keep confidential any information they disclose??

In practice, this means that a teenager who sits in a consulting room with his or her doctor can rely on their doctor to keep confidential any information they disclose unless an exemption applies.

    How old is old enough?

There is no lower age limit, and this is the case if the young patient has presented themselves to a health service independently, or if they see you while mum or dad waits in the waiting room.

So imagine Maya, aged 15, nervously attending the family GP by herself for the first time, worried about pregnancy following an unprotected but consensual sexual encounter two days earlier with her 15-year-old boyfriend of several weeks.

Unless this incident led the GP to strongly suspect abuse, assault, or imminent risk of harm to self or others, the doctor is legally bound to keep this information confidential ? even if Maya?s mother visits the next day for her routine Pap smear and mentions her concern about Maya?s boyfriend distracting her from her school work.

If Maya wanted to discuss emergency or ongoing contraception with her GP, a different legal framework comes into play. The right to consent to your own medical treatment kicks in at the age of legal majority, which is 18 years.

But common law allows for a medical practitioner to assess a legal minor for their competence to consent to their own treatment. If they?re found to be competent, parental consent is?not?required, and the adolescent can consent to their own treatment.

Maya would need to satisfy her GP that she has a full understanding of any treatment being proposed (contraception, for instance) and that she voluntarily accepts the treatment.

In South Australia and New South Wales, additional legislation provides for younger teenagers to consent to their own treatment.

    Ethical complications

Nevertheless, in optimal adolescent health care, the family, cultural and psychosocial environments of each patient are considered. Important ethical issues can arise, and these can intersect with legal issues.

What if the GP believed that Maya?s parents would in fact be tolerant of this new turn in her relationship and would want to support her?

What if the GP also felt that for Maya to keep a secret from her parents this would actually cause her more anxiety than the sexual relationship itself?

The ideal consultation would also include an exploration of these issues with Maya.

The opposite might be true ? what if the GP believed that family repercussions for Maya?s sexual activity could be serious, perhaps due to religious or cultural beliefs?

The GP might wish to offer Maya other options for support in this context.

    Parents want to know

In the Melbourne study, 40% of parents wanted to be told of their adolescent?s sexual activity, and this rose to almost 60% if their daughter was pregnant or if their son or daughter had a sexually transmitted infection.

Parental desire to be informed about health behaviours or problems was highest for mental health issues, such as depression (87% of parents), eating disorders (81%) and drug use other than alcohol, smoking or marijuana (78%).

It?s understandable why parents want to be informed when mental illness or substance abuse is involved.

Psychological illnesses and substance misuse can impact on an individual?s insight and capacity to care for themselves, and surrounding support persons are part of a ?care team?.

When these issues are identified in confidential consultations with adolescents, the law does not change per se, but the practicalities of health care probably do in most situations.

Managing a mental health condition may require treatment from a number of health professionals and the establishment a support network.

doctor and teen Should parents have access to teens medical records?

Teens have a right to confidential and private health care.

Part of the therapeutic armament would include focused discussions with the adolescent about informing and involving parents or carers, being careful not to breach confidentiality in order to gain trust and build a therapeutic relationship.

This applies whether an adolescent patient is 13 or 19, although the young person?s maturity, educational stage and psychosocial needs must be considered in the context of their family and cultural background.

    Case by case?

Adolescent health care is a challenging area of medicine, not in the least because adolescents are in a ?grey area? legally and as individual patients.

There are varying levels of maturity and autonomy that must be assessed for each adolescent and in each clinical situation.

Parents can be the most important source of support for most adolescents and ideally should be involved when their adolescent child has complex or changing health and wellbeing needs.

Nevertheless, the confidential consultation is essential as young people learn to take responsibility for their health and learn to navigate the health system ? and the world in general ? in their personal quest for maturity and autonomy.

Google Nexus 7 docking station found in ASUS Shop in the U.K.

You might remember that back in December, we showed you that an audio docking station was beeing prepared for the Google Nexus 7. News about the tablet had come from the ASUS Japan web site and revealed that the dock would include a USB port and a 3.5mm earphone jack for the tablet, which would fit into the docking station in landscape mode. The site had the device priced at the Japanese Yen equivalent of $41 USD.Well, here it is over one month later and the Google Nexus 7 audio docking station is now listed on the ASUS Shop in the U.K. You can buy the accessory now for ?49.98 ($80.35 USD). That price doesn't include the ?6.00 shipping charge which brings the cost up to ?55.98? ($90 USD). And you might have to tack on some tax as well. Besides the USB port and the earphone jack, the docking station is angled to provide you with the best view of your tablet's screen to watch movies, video, read email and view web sites. The docking station is shipped 2 weeks after your funds are received.

For those in the states who feel that those prices seem steep in U.S. Dollars, a company called B&H Photo was taking pre-orders of the audio docking station back in December for $39.99. B&H is still accepting pre-orders of the dock for the same price and the good news is that it is expected to start shipping this Friday! We do have to let you know that the price does not include shipping.

'Climate dice' loaded, 2012 in top ten warmest

NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies

This map represents global temperature anomalies averaged from 2008 through 2012. NASA ranked 2012 as the ninth warmest on record in a new analysis released Tuesday.

    By John Roach, NBC News

Government scientists said Tuesday that 2012 was among the top ten warmest on record globally and continues a trend of rising temperatures due to increasing emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

?The 'climate dice' are now sufficiently loaded,? James Hansen, director of NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, wrote in a note explaining the findings.?

Loaded dice mean that temperature extremes such as the heat and drought in the central Rockies and Great Plains in 2012; and Oklahoma, Texas and Northern Mexico in 2011 are becoming more common than they were several decades ago.

"The observant person who is willing to look at the past over several seasons and several years, should notice that the frequency of unusual warm anomalies has increased and the extreme anomalies," Hansen said in telephone conference with reporters.?

The average temperature in 2012 was about 58.3 degrees Fahrenheit (14.6 Celsius), which is 1.0 F (0.6 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline, NASA reported.

The average global temperature has risen about 1.4 degrees F (0.8 C) since 1880, according to the new analysis.

    Ranking the warmth
NASA ranked 2012 as the ninth warmest since record keeping began in 1880. A separate analysis from NOAA said 2012 was the 10th warmest since that time and the warmest La Nina year on record.?

La Nina is the cold phase of El Nino phenomenon characterized by cooler than average temperatures in the eastern Pacific.

The difference between the two reports hinges on the different methods the agencies use to collect and interpret data. One biggie is that NASA extrapolates observational data into regions without meteorological stations, including the polar regions, whereas NOAA does not.

Some of the fastest warming is occurring in the Arctic, which hit a new low for summer sea ice extent in 2012.?

NASA noted that with the exception of 1998, which had an exceptionally strong el Nino and thus warm temperatures, the nine warmest years in its 132 year record have all occurred since 2000, with 2010 and 2005 ranking as the hottest on record.?

NOAA reported that 2012 marks the 36th consecutive year with a global temperature above the 20th century average. The last below average year was 1976.

    Warming flatlines
The mean pace of warming over the past five years has been flat, Hansen noted, a phenomenon he explained as likely due to several recently strong la Nina years, which lead to a cooling in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, and the effect of aerosols, or airborne particles that reflect sunlight.

"We are very suspicious that global aerosols have increased," Hansen said. "We know from anecdotal evidence that China and some developing countries their air pollution has gotten worse."

What?s more, the sun?s irradiance has decreased over the last solar cycle, which has a slight effect on temperatures as well.

Nevertheless, Hansen noted, the long term trend is warming.?

"Each decade has been significantly warmer than the prior decade since the mid 1970s and that warming trend has been conclusively linked to the effect of increasing greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide," he said.

    Hot in the US
The new reports on global temperatures fall on the heels of a NOAA report released earlier this month that found 2012 was the warmest ever on record in the US and a draft assessment from the federal government that found global warming is already impacting American life.?

A new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council released Tuesday found that said 2012 saw?3,527 monthly weather records broken for heat, rain, and snow in the US.

"The evidence is undeniable: extreme weather events are pounding our communities and if we don't curb climate change, many will grow more severe," Frances Beinecke, the environmental group's president, wrote in a blog post about the new report.

The record warmth in the continental U.S. was offset by notably cooler than average temperatures in Alaska, far western Canada, central Asia, parts of the eastern and equatorial Pacific and parts of the Southern Ocean.

In addition to the warmth in the US, above average temperatures were felt in South America, most of Europe and Africa, and western, southern, and far northeastern Asia, the NOAA report said.

Temperatures this "past year, unlike the US temperature, were not a record globally, but they certainly were warm," Thomas Karl, director of NOAA?s National Climatic Data Center, said in the call with reporters.?

"In fact it marks a consistent above average global temperature. Every year has been above average since 1976."?

Boeing, union engineers to resume talks Wednesday

    SPEEA photo

SPEEA President Tom McCarty addressed a red-shirted union group at Boeing's Duwamish facility on Wednesday. Boeing detailed its latest offer Monday afternoon to negotiators representing 23,000 of the company's engineers.

    St. Louis Business Journal

Boeing Co. delivered complete details of its latest offer Monday afternoon to negotiators representing 23,000 of the company's engineers.

Contract talks between the company and Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) are slated to restart Wednesday, Reuters reports. The latest offer in the four-year agreement would increase raises for professional workers by 5 percent in each of the new contract's first two years, and 4 percent in each of the remaining two years. Technicians would get 4 percent annual raises. Health care and retirement benefits, among other contract provisions, would remain unchanged.

Last week, the parties had three days of talks in Seattle with federal mediators. A strike hasn't been authorized by the union, but SPEEA has been conducting strike training.

Boeing's engineering operations are expected to come under scrutiny, as the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed Friday that it will review design and production of the 787 Dreamliner following a week that raised concerns about the safety of the new aircraft.

On Monday, The National Transportation Safety Board said it returned a Boeing 787 Dreamliner that caught fire a week ago back to Japan Airlines (JAL). The NTSB is examining the burned-out battery at a lab in Washington, D.C., The Seattle Times reported.

"Brooklyn Castle" easily checkmates your inner cynic.

Katie Dellamaggiore's lively and affecting documentary introduces us to a cast of characters that's very winning (in both senses of the word).

It's not To Sir, With Love: It's fierce ambition, the channeling of emotion, and hours of drilling.

    Enlightening, inspiring and expertly crafted.

    An irresistibly uplifting doc.

Castle is suspenseful, funny and, particularly in its depiction of the challenging home lives of some of the kids, moving.

... a powerful and positive story about dedicated teachers helping kids succeed no matter what their circumstances

Like chess, not exactly a high-energy experience but seeing what these kids accomplish, seemingly against all odds is breathtaking all the same.

...provides a corrective to the popular image of American schools as obsessed with sports and popularity, and it makes the strongest possible case for funding after-school activities.

Chess, brilliant young students and great teachers potent mix.

The I.S. 318 team? A delightfully motley, vulnerable, multicultural bunch, whose addiction to chess has allowed them higher aspirations for top high schools and, eventually, college and careers. You will root for them like crazy.

We meet five of the team's members and several of their teachers; by its end, you'll be rooting for them all.

"BROOKLYN CASTLE is a compelling, engaging and inspiring Documentary, featuring Junior High kids that you can relate to. Even if you don't know the game of Chess all too well, it won't stop you from enjoying this pleasant film."

Brooklyn Castle provides a snapshot of indomitable American can-do attitude, and gives one hope.

The admirable Brooklyn Castle transcends its formula to become an optimistic look at extracurricular education and young people.
