In Israel, Romney declares Jerusalem to be capital

JERUSALEM (AP) - Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he has accused the present administration in the past of not doing enough to prevent Iran from potentially developing nuclear weapons.

But in an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display earlier in the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers.

In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order it moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Apple Popular in Iran Despite Sanctions

Despite a U.S. export ban, gadgets from popular U.S. companies like Apple are making their way into Iran, Reuters reported.

About 100 stores in the Middle Eastern country are selling Apple products, the news service found.

Computer equipment often makes it to Iranian merchants through underground trade routes throughout the region. Customers, meanwhile, access iTunes and the App Store to download music, videos, and apps through email addresses registered outside Iran and with foreign gift cards.

"Iran's booming Apple business underscores the limitations of economic sanctions by the United States and other countries," Reuters said.

U.S. companies are forbidden from selling goods or services to Iran without special authorization. The restrictions focus on the country's banks and oil industry, in an effort to curb Iran's nuclear program, according to Reuters.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to the company's sales policies, Apple products "are subject to U.S. and foreign export control laws and regulations and must be purchased, sold, exported, re-exported, transferred, and used in compliance with such export laws and regulations."

According to Reuters, some of these Apple re-sellers have been affected by recent sanctions, with merchants relying mostly on the purchases from creative types - musicians, film editors, and photographers - to keep them afloat.

United Airlines orders 150 Boeing 737s

United Airlines is buying 150 Boeing 737s, planning to use them to replace older planes that are not as fuel efficient.

The order announced on Thursday includes 100 of Boeing's new 737 Max 9s.That's a new version of the plane that will have new engines and other tweaks to cut how much fuel it burns. Those planes start arriving at United in 2018.

United is also buying 50 of Boeing's current 737-900ER. Those planes begin arriving late next year.

The order doesn't necessarily mean United is getting bigger. The planes that begin arriving late next year will replace older Boeing 757-200s, which are no longer made. It said the new planes are 15 percent more fuel-efficient per seat than the ones they will replace. The Maxes that begin arriving in 2018 could either replace old planes or make United's fleet bigger, CEO Jeff Smisek said.

The order would be worth more than $14 billion at list prices, although big airlines like United don't pay list prices.

The 737 is a workhorse of domestic flying. United already flies 43 of those planes, which seat 173 people. For the new 737 Max, United is ordering the biggest version Boeing makes, which seats up to 215 people.

The order is a win for Boeing Co., which has been hoping to boost orders for the Max. Airbus beat Boeing to the punch last year by offering a competing version of its own A320 with a new engine earlier than Boeing did.

Smisek said his airline had "extensive discussions with both Airbus and Boeing" before picking Boeing. He spoke at a news conference in Chicago, where both Boeing and United are based.

Boeing Chairman and CEO Jim McNerney also attended the news conference.

Shares of United Continental Holdings Inc. fell $1.08, or 4.4 percent, to $23.70 in morning trading Thursday, while Boeing shares fell 29 cents to $71.73.

Broke Girls Guide: BGG Weekender: Le French, Some Ghosts and a Bit of Grease

We here at Broke Girl's Guide just got back from a (work-related) trip to London, and after a week spent feeling like a pauper in a city that makes NYC seem cheap, we're happy to have returned to sunny LA. Suddenly, we feel flush! However, we know better than to spend it all in one weekend, so as per usual we've put together some broke-girl-friendly ways to spend the upcoming two-day sabbatical.

Friday

Despite the drive, you're going to want to head to Venice directly after work on Friday (traffic is never that bad going west...promise!) to hit up the Venice Beach Biennial. We listed it as one of the five things we're most looking forward to this month, so you know it's not to be missed (although we also listed National Fried Chicken Day... but hey, our opinions are totally legit). After, grab a quick bite and/or some drinks at Larry's or Dry Tour and then head off to a Ghostbusters screening on the Promenade.

If you just can't bear the thought of driving all the way west of the 405, however, you may want to opt instead for a screening of Ghost in Hollywood as a part of the Oscars Outdoors series. There will be food trucks to grub from on-site, but afterward we suggest you pop into Off Vine for their famous Chocolate Souffl? or Wood & Vine for a few bits of their Butterscotch Pot De Creme.

Saturday

July 14th is Bastille Day, so we suggest celebrating with a Parisian Day Out on the town. If you don't feel like totally immersing yourself in la vie ? la fran?aise, however, or if you're just one of those annoying people who is motivated to drive to Pasadena before 8 a.m. on a Saturday, instead start your day at the Free Fitness Expo at the Rose Bowl. Then, head back to Hollywood for a game of Capture the Flag near Runyon Canyon, because you don't have kids yet and are therefore allowed (nay, encouraged!) to act like a child yourself whenever possible. After, pick up a bite or two to eat at "A Gathering of Food Trucks" on La Brea. Or, if you're feeling a bit more posh than usual this weekend, opt instead to partake in Taste Culver City, where for $50 you'll sample snacks from a host of CC eateries. If you'd rather save your money for important things, like the rumored Topshop pop-up coming soon to the Grove, make your way instead to a Bastille Day celebration in WeHo. Around this time, you may also want to pop into newbie eatery Laurel Hardware for a bite and/or a cocktail. Then, head to the Hollywood Bowl for a Grease Sing-A-Long and yes... this is why you're single.

Sunday

If you were pretty controlled with your finances this week/weekend (read: did not spend $1 million on black cabs in London), reward yourself on Sunday with a ticket to the Bon Appetit Grub Crawl. The event is $89 and includes indulgences at Father's Office, Sotto, Picca and Lukshon, all of which are must-trys if you haven't sampled their menus yet. Don't despair if the event is too rich for your blood, however, as you can instead partake in another Bastille Day Festival, this time located a bit south of Culver City. Later, pop into Your Neighborhood Studio, one of our favorite spots for fun (and fit) dance classes in all of L.A., for a free open house from 2-6 p.m., which will include classes on Zumba, Samba, Burlesque and more. After, reward your hard work with a cold one at The Craft of Homebrewing event at the Craft & Folk Art Museum located in Miracle Mile. Then, pop into rookie restaurant Duplex on 3rd for a bite to eat -- the menu isn't exactly broke-girl-friendly, but you can easily split a pasta and a flatbread for around $10 per person (aka, the price of a stick of gum in London).

Over the last few years here at iMore, I've taken iPhones and iPads through the car wash and the dishwasher. I've tried to send them into orbit on model rockets and to the deep blue depths beneath toy race boats. I've sledded on them and wailed on them. I've even worn them in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fights and taken them on trips back to the future.

But I've never actually lost one. Not until now.

Penney lays off 350 workers at Texas headquarters

NEW YORK (AP) ? J.C. Penney Co. says it is laying off 350 more workers at its headquarters in Plano, Texas, as the department store struggles to transform its business under a new CEO.

The cuts, announced Tuesday, follow the company's move in April to eliminate 600 workers at its headquarters.

Penney is cutting costs amid the difficult task of turning around its business. It is overhauling every aspect of its operations, from a new pricing plan to new brands. The new pricing plan, which cuts hundreds of sales events, has turned off shoppers. The company reported a bigger-than-expected loss and a 20 percent drop in revenue in the first quarter.

Penney now has 3,100 workers at its headquarters, a 29 reduction from the 4,400 employees it had before the layoffs this spring.

Twitter makes changes to iPhone, Android apps

New versions of the Twitter app?are available for iPhone and Android phones, with the short-messaging blog noting that they offer "several updates to bring you closer to everything you care about."

That includes expanded tweets, something that Twitter began offering on its desktop version last month.

"Since we?introduced expanded Tweets?on twitter.com, we?ve added several new partners like?MLB?and?C-SPAN?to a diverse and growing list of media sources,"?Sung Hu Kim, Twitter's product manager?for mobile, wrote on the company's blog.

Now, using Twitter apps for iPhone and Android, when you tap on a tweet linking to a Kickstarter project, he wrote, you can "play its video directly from the Tweet details view in your app." You can also read article summaries when you tap tweets linked to sources like magazines,?or view images and video?when you expand tweets linked to sites like Etsy and Vimeo.

Twitter also says it has made "major improvements?in?search autocomplete?so that you will see more suggestions when you search for people. As before, you can search for real names or @usernames before you complete your query."

There is also support for push notification for tweets for those folks you follow whenever they send a new tweet or retweet. All you have to do is turn on push notification for that person using the "action button" on their profile; you edit all notifications in your account settings on your phone.

Another added feature, this one for iPhone users but not Android, is?being able to find the "best tweets and photos for events experiences like?twitter.com/#NASCAR on your iPhone. Now, Twitter for iPhone complements any live event, whether you?re watching from home or from the stands."

In new ad, Obama challenges Romney on China trade

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is challenging Mitt Romney's promises to crack down on China's trading practices, saying in an ad released Saturday that the Republican candidate profited by allowing China to strip away U.S. jobs.

Obama's ad turns again to a recent Washington Post report that several businesses backed by Romney's former private equity firm moved American jobs to China and India to cut costs. In a parting shot, a narrator says Romney is "not the solution. He's the problem."

The ad follows Obama's two-day bus tour in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where the president announced plans to file a trade complaint against China at the World Trade Organization for unfairly imposing duties on the exports of U.S.-produced automobiles. Ohio is home to several auto plants and tens of thousands of workers directly employed by the auto industry.

China remains a flashpoint in the presidential campaign.

Romney has accused Obama of failing to live up to promises to get tough on the economic powerhouse, saying he would label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office and fight the theft of intellectual property and job losses.

Obama's administration says it has taken a broad effort to crack down on what it calls unfair Chinese trading practices, filing seven trade cases with the WTO against Beijing.

The 30-second spot opens with a clip of Romney during a 2011 Republican primary debate. He says "the Chinese are smiling all the way to the bank taking our jobs and taking a lot of our future. And I am not willing to let that happen."

A narrator responds that Romney "made a fortune letting it happen."

The Obama ad refers to the Post account about the role Romney's firm played with companies that were "pioneers" in helping outsource jobs. It pointed to one business that said it was a "one-stop shop for their outsource requirements."

"Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem," the narrator says.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said it was "no surprise President Obama would want to distract Americans from the devastating June jobs numbers, but the American people deserve better than dishonest ads."

The accusations over China come against the backdrop of a sluggish economy. The June jobs report released Friday found that the economy added only 80,000 jobs during the month and unemployment stayed at 8.2 percent, fueling Romney's charges that Obama has failed to guide the economy out of the recession.

The Obama spot is part of a $25 million ad buy in July and will run in New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

The ad represents the latest attempt by Obama's team to discredit Romney's argument that his private sector experience makes him more qualified than the president to steer the economy during high unemployment. Obama's campaign has repeatedly cited a recent Washington Post story outlining how several businesses backed by Romney's former firm, Bain Capital, transferred jobs to lower-wage countries such as China and India.

Romney's campaign has questioned the accuracy of the report and asked the Post for a retraction. The newspaper stood by its report.

At campaign events, Obama has pointed to the outsourcing charges, saying he would end tax credits for companies that shipped jobs overseas, similar to a pledge he made during his 2008 campaign.

"You want somebody who will give tax breaks to companies that create jobs in manufacturing here in the United States, not ship them overseas," Obama said last month in Miami Beach, Fla.

A fascinating new?Harvard Medical School study points to a single gene as a cause of autism-like behavior, with rapamycin, a commonly used immunosuppresant drug, working effectively to prevent these symptoms. It?s the first time, they say, that researchers have identified a molecular component for the cerebellum?s role in autism.

The research looks closely at how Purkinje cells, which are essential for cerebellar function, are fewer in number in patients with autism. Mice who have copies of the TSC1 gene in their Purkinje cells deleted, exhibit typical symptoms of autism, including abnormal social intereractions, repetitive behaviors and abnormal communication.

This is right on the heels of an equally fascinating New York Times story, In Treatment for Leukemia, Glimpses for the Future, in which a cancer scientist, Dr. Lukas Wartman, experienced remission from adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia after researchers identified one of his genes that was in overdrive, generating huge amounts of protein spurring his cancer?s growth, and then tried out a new drug aimed at shutting down the malfunctioning gene.

It could be a whole new way of looking at and curing what had once seemed incurable ? if scientists find a way to make genome sequencing more generally available and affordable, paid for by insurance ? which the New York Times speculates could take anywhere from a few years to a decade ? and drug companies and biotechs invest in research to attack faulty genes rather than tumors.
