The popular ?Madagascar? animal quartet returns in the third installment for ?Madagascar 3: Europe?s Most Wanted.? Not only is the film surprisingly heartwarming and funny, but it also is an improved addition to the DreamWorks ?Madagascar? franchise. Even with a couple of far-fetched gaps in the storyline, it is a spirited film to kick off the summer with.

Following their last adventures in Madagascar and Africa, Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) are still determined as ever to return home to their beloved Central Park Zoo in New York City. The four swim their way to Monte Carlo to seek out the mischievous penguins for help.

The gang runs into Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand), a crazed animal control officer with keen Holmes-like senses. She has made it her goal to chase them down and is particularly determined to add Alex?s lion head to her crowded wall collection of kills.

In order to hide from her, the zoo animals stow away on a circus train that shows promise of going to America. They meet and try to befriend the circus stars, Stefano (Martin Short) the sea lion, Gia (Jessica Chastain) the jaguar, and their circus leader Vitaly (Bryan Cranston) the tiger, under false pretenses?and that is where their journey continues to go awry.

Twisting the storyline and throwing the gang into the touring circus, screenwriters Noah Baumbach and Eric Darnell were able to introduce fresh characters with strong narrative backgrounds, which brings humor and emotions that all translate well on screen.

The film features characters voiced by a very colorful cast of big names. As always, Chris Rock and Ben Stiller stand out from the pack with their comical back-and-forth dialogues. Voicing the new characters are Jessica Chastain, Martin Short, and Bryan Cranston, who give great deliveries as the traveling circus trio who have only each other to rely on. The best performance, however, is by Sacha Baron Cohen as the always-hysterical King Julien.

?Madagascar 3? is an all-around solid family flick that doesn?t bore the adults who are accompanying their children. The film is fast-paced, so younger kids may not catch all of the accents and dialogues. But they will be kept thoroughly entertained by the dynamic visuals and vibrant circus acts to catchy tunes like Katy Perry?s ?Firework.?

While the plot may be a bit predictable and doesn?t build much suspense, this third and what seems to be the last of the adventures does exceed expectations and is thrice as entertaining as the original ?Madagascar.?
