Conservationists say that the species' small, fragmented population is now the biggest threat to its survival, with animals so sparsely distributed that they are simply unable to meet each other to mate. Because females that haven't mated when they are in oestrus can develop problems with their uterus, the rare encounters that do take place often come to naught. At best, rhino mothers take several years between pregnancies ? meaning that the birth rate in the wild is unlikely to keep up with poaching and natural deaths.

Drastic measures
This desperate situation has led conservationists in Sabah to a desperate conclusion: that the only way to maintain the rhino population here is to capture as many as possible of the remaining animals ? which may number as few as 30 ? and subject them to assisted reproductive technology. That includes scrubbing out the uterus of Puntung, and possibly techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and cloning, the likes of which have rarely been wielded in the name of conservation. ?Either we give up or we try to make every fertile rhino contribute to the future of this species,? says John Payne, executive director of the Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. ?The best way to do that is to bring them into fenced, managed facilities.?

Such a drastic attempt to rescue a highly endangered species has precedents. Conservationists have, through heroic efforts, wrestled species such as the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) and the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) back from the brink of extinction by bringing all the remaining animals together, using artificial insemination to spread sperm and maximize genetic diversity, and keeping offspring alive through round-the-clock husbandry.

In the case of the Sumatran rhino, however, some conservationists worry that without a long-term strategy for reversing the environmental pressures that are killing them off, captive breeding alone can never restore the wild population. ?It's not a plan unless you've mitigated the threats that wiped them out in the first place,? says Alan Rabinowitz, chief executive of the wild-cat conservation group Panthera in New York city. Others are uncomfortable with throwing so much money and effort at a single species ? a single animal, in Puntung's case ? when the chances of success are so slim. ?One of the biggest challenges facing conservation today is our inability to step back and admit that there are animals that would take a little bit less work and a little bit less money but have the potential to survive for their genetic diversity into the future,? says John Fraser, chief executive of the New Knowledge Organization in New York city, a think tank and advocate of a triage response to species conservation. ?They may not be as charismatic, but quite frankly we have to admit that some species are not going to make it and it's really, really sad.?

In March of this year, staff at the Vancouver Aquarium became the proud ?parents? of 400 tiny opalescent squid. These tiny cephalopods (a taxonomic group including squid, octopus and cuttlefish) will eventually reach an adult size of 1 foot; however, they are currently no bigger than a grain of rice. The video footage shows the squid babies eating and undertaking some rudimentary jet-propulsive movement ? but the most spectacular part of the video is the showcasing of the chromatophores. Chromatophores are the pigment-containing cells of all cephalopods, and they allow these creatures to become camouflaged in almost any environment. Each pigment cell is directly connected to the nervous system and several muscle groups, which allows the squid to very intricately control both the amount of pigment and the specific colors used. "The President demonizes home grown energy and pursues tax policies that advantage foreign energy over domestic," Jenkins said.

Meanwhile in his short weekly address,?President Obama said the U.S. needs to "serve" service members who return home with healthcare and access to education.

"We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: by making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect," the president said.

?We never announced that the product was available in beta form on Facebook, but our users found it anyway ? this just reinforces how much of a need and desire to connect with others through social chat,? ooVoo CEO Yuval Baharav told Mashable.

Doctor Whooligan: Matt Smith Carries The London 2012 Olympic Torch

I guess Matt Smith is a morning person. The Eleventh Doctor was up very early this morning but it was not to fight Daleks or save the universe. It was to carry the Olympic Torch on its eighth day of travels to the Olympics. Today the torch is traveling 115 miles from Cardiff to Swansea.

The Doctor accepted the torch at around 6:20 am.?Smith was clearly moved by the turnout of nearly a thousand people who came to see him carry the flame and also felt incredibly honored to be a part of the festivities.

Smith clearly understands that the honor bestowed upon him is bigger than?Doctor Who. He also was clearly having a great time. And why not after all David Tennant only got to carry the Olympic Torch on TV (In Fear Her.)

Smith was interviewed about the honor. It appeared in The Sun.

I would do it in my underpants. It?s the Olympic torch. I would probably get a bigger crowd for that.

After watching the Clippers outscore the Spurs by 22 points in the first quarter of Game Three of their playoff series, it appeared, if ever so briefly, that San Antonio was not as invincible as everyone thought.? Then we saw them retaliate with a 50-17 run of their own and realized, perhaps they are.

At only 23 years old each, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are disturbingly good.? The Los Angeles Lakers had to play their very best just to be able to stay on the same floor as them.? The future of the league is in good hands.

In Game Three of the Lakers-Thunder series, the two teams combined to shoot 67-70 from the free throw line, with the Lakers going 41-42 and Kobe going 18-18.? I?ve never gone 18-for-18 at anything.

If Oklahoma City makes the Finals, they?ll have bested four of the last five, and ten of the last thirteen, NBA championship franchises, in doing so.

Why does Gregg Popovich have to be such a sourpuss during mid-game interviews or did Lisa Salters have it coming for asking such stupid questions?

If we had a Philadelphia 76ers-Indianapolis Pacers Eastern Conference Finals, would anyone watch?

If you think the Miami Heat have done well with three of the top five drafted players in 2003 on their roster (James, Bosh, Wade), keep in mind, the Oklahoma City Thunder also have three top-five draft picks, all of whom they drafted themselves (Durant, 2^nd, 2007; Westbrook, 4^th, 2008; Harden, 3^rd, 2009).

Which duo this post-season has been more dynamic: Wade/James or Durant/Westbrook?? Let?s hope we find out in the Finals.

Is any lead safe in these playoffs?

If there?s one thing more enjoyable than a Blake Griffin dunk, it was watching Tim Duncan, twelve years his senior, negate those dunks at the rim.

Finding Growth in Low Volatility Stocks and ETFs - Investment U

Historically, low volatility stocks have performed as well as the broad market with far less risk.

As a financial writer, I am regularly inundated with friends and family members who ask two familiar questions.

The first is, ?Where can I park my money these days to earn a decent yield without any downside risk??

They don?t want to hear it, but I tell them the truth anyway. ?Nowhere. If you want yield, you have to take risk. And if you want a high yield, you have to take considerable risk.?

The second most frequently asked question is, ?Is there a way I can invest in stocks without having to endure all that neck-snapping volatility??

Here the answer is a bit more nuanced. There are things you can do to soften the curves in your equity portfolio, from running trailing stops to selling covered calls, ideas we?ve talked about here before.

But there is another alternative, one that even widows and orphans can embrace: low volatility stocks ? and the ETFs that invest in them.

Four Low Volatility Stock Funds to Consider

Take the PowerShares S&P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio (Nasdaq: SPLV), for example. Since its inception a year ago, investors have plunked more than $1.6 billion into the fund. And they have been amply rewarded. Despite its somewhat stodgy portfolio ? filled with names like Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), Kellogg (NYSE: K) and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) ? the fund is up 9% year-to-date.

(I should warn here that funds like these do go down from time to time, just less than the broad market ordinarily.)

There are plenty of reasons to believe this will continue to be a good investment going forward. Plenty of academic and industry research confirms that safe, well-established companies provide generous returns to investors over the long term, without the sleepless nights. It seems counterintuitive, but low-risk, low-valuation, higher-yielding stocks have fared as well or better than go-go growth stocks over the long haul.

And today there are 14 different funds that bill themselves as low-beta investments. For example, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Minimum Volatility Index Fund (Nasdaq: EEMV) holds more conservative blue-chips in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia. It would be a good choice for a retirement account or a college fund for a child or grandchild with five or more years until matriculation.

If you are too conservative to invest in emerging markets ? a mistake, in my view, given their attractive prospects ? you might consider the Russell Developed ex-U.S. Low Volatility ETF (Nasdaq: XLVO). Or, if you want to invest globally but without a particular emphasis on emerging markets, consider the iShares MSCI All Country World Minimum Volatility Index (Nasdaq: ACWV).

Low Risk, High Return

You?ve heard the old investors? saw that risk and return go hand in hand, that you have to take more risk to get better returns. But there are exceptions. Low volatility stocks are one of them. Historically, they have performed as well as the broad market with far less risk.

If you know someone who has a low stock allocation ? or no stock allocation ? because they were burned during the market meltdown of 2008 or during the sudden downdraft of last year?s third quarter, low-volatility ETFs are a good solution.

And when I find that special investment with a decent yield and no downside risk, I?ll let you know that, too.

But don?t hold your breath?

All Commercial Real Estate Sectors Continue to Improve, Multifamily ...

WASHINGTON, DC, May 24, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) ? Shaking off a prolonged impact from the recession, fundamentals are gradually improving in all of the major commercial real estate sectors, according to the National Association of Realtors(R) quarterly commercial real estate forecast. The apartment rental sector has fully recovered and is growing.

The findings also are confirmed in NAR?s recent quarterly Commercial Real Estate Market Survey, which collects data from members about market activity.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said new jobs are the key. ?Ongoing job creation, which is at a higher level this year, is fueling an underlying demand for commercial real estate space, assisted by a steady increase in consumer spending,? he said. ?The pattern shows gradually declining commercial vacancy rates, with consequential but generally modest rent growth.?

Yun expects the economy to add 2 to 2.5 million jobs both this year and in 2013, on the heels of 1.7 million new jobs in 2011, assuming a new federal budget is passed before the end of the year. ?Although we need even stronger job growth, by far the greatest impact of job creation is in multifamily housing, where newly formed households striking out on their own have increased demand for apartment rentals ? this is the sector with the lowest vacancy rates and strongest rent growth, which is attracting many investors.?

Rising apartment rents also are having a positive impact on home sales because many long-time renters now view homeownership as a better long-term option, Yun noted.

A large problem remains for purchases of commercial property priced under $2.5 million. ?Our recent commercial lending survey shows that there is very little capital available for small business, which is significantly impacting commercial real estate transactions, although funding is less restrictive for bigger properties.?

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook(1) offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc.,(2) a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets Vacancy rates in the office sector are projected to fall from 16.3 percent in the second quarter of this year to 16.0 percent in the second quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.3 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.6 percent.

Office rents should increase 2.0 percent this year and 2.5 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, is forecast at 24.7 million square feet in 2012 and 48.0 million next year.

Industrial Markets Industrial vacancy rates are likely to decline from 11.0 percent in the current quarter to 10.7 percent in the second quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.7 percent; Los Angeles, 5.0 percent; and Miami at 7.2 percent.

Annual industrial rent is expected to rise 1.6 percent in 2012 and 2.4 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 44.1 million square feet this year and 62.4 million in 2013.

Retail Markets Retail vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 11.3 percent in the second quarter to 10.7 percent in the second quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.7 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., at 4.0 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., at 5.0 percent.

Average retail rent should rise 0.8 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space is projected at 8.0 million square feet this year and 21.9 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is likely to see vacancy rates drop from 4.5 percent in the second quarter to 4.3 percent in the second quarter of 2013; apartment vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are New York City, 2.1 percent; Portland, Ore., at 2.3 percent; and Minneapolis at 2.4 percent.

After rising 2.2 percent last year, average apartment rent is expected to increase 4.0 percent in 2012 and another 4.1 percent next year. ?Such a rent increase will raise the core consumer inflation rate. The Federal Reserve, in turn, may be forced to raise interest rates, possibly as early as late 2013.?

Multifamily net absorption is forecast at 215,900 units this year and 230,300 in 2013.
