Markets subdued as Black Friday dawns in US

(AP) ? Markets were subdued Friday as Wall Street readied to return following the Thanksgiving holiday and as the U.S. shopping season begins in earnest.

The day after Thanksgiving is dubbed "Black Friday" because it is when U.S. retailers traditionally turn their first profit of the year as millions of Americans rush out to stores in search of gifts for Christmas and other seasonal holidays.

A strong holiday shopping season will be used to help predict the momentum of the U.S. economy, the world's biggest. Anecdotal evidence and footfall figures over the coming days will be closely monitored.

"With much of the northeast still struggling in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, holiday shopping has the potential to disappoint," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.1 percent at 5,797 while Germany's DAX fell the same rate to 7,238. The CAC-40 in France was 0.1 percent lower too at 3,493.

Wall Street was poised for a fairly unspectacular return from Thanksgiving, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures up 0.1 percent. Trading is expected to remain subdued especially as it's only a half day in U.S. markets.

"Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday always means quieter markets and this year is no different," said Alastair McCaig, market analyst at IG.

Though trading levels are clearly down, investors will be monitoring developments in Brussels as European Union leaders try to cobble together a budget deal. The prevailing view in the markets is that nothing will be achieved Friday and that another meeting will be needed.

Cyprus is also in focus amid signs that the country, one of the 17 EU countries that use the euro, is close to agreeing a financial bailout deal with representatives from the EU, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Cyprus stocks were up nearly 10 percent Friday, a clear indicator of an expected deal.

Over the rest of the year, the focus will likely remain on whether the White House can come to a deal with Congress on the budget and whether Greece will get its next batch of bailout cash.

The expectation in the markets is that both will be dealt with positively. A deal to give Greece more money is expected to be achieved at a euro finance ministers meeting on Monday.

Hopes that Greece will avoid an imminent bankruptcy have lain behind the euro's recent advance. That held Friday, with Europe's single currency up a further 0.2 percent at $1.2897.

Earlier in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.8 percent to 21,913.98 and South Korea's Kospi added 0.6 percent to 1,911.33. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.

In the oil markets, benchmark oil for January delivery was down 13 cents to $87.25 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Have A Healthy Thanksgiving: Superfoods Hidden In Your Feast

The typical Thanksgiving can clock in at as many as 3,000 to 4,500 calories, an uncomfortably-full belly and a day of "physical activity" that includes little more than lifting fork to mouth.

However, some of the season's healthiest superfoods are present at your Thanksgiving table -- although many may be disguised by butter, oil or whipped cream. It's fitting, considering the origins of the holiday as a celebration of the autumn harvest, that some of September, October and November's best produce shines in this festive meal. Here are some of our favorite Thanksgiving superfoods, plus healthy ways to enjoy them. Let us know your healthiest Turkey Day dishes in the comments!

  • Cranberries

<strong>Why we love them:</strong> Loaded with antioxidants, these little red berries are also <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/29/healthy-food-healthiest-list_n_1636409.html#slide=1161400">powerful bacteria fighters</a> and are known for preventing urinary tract infections. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> Commercially-prepared sauces and juices often contain <a href="http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/cranberry-000235.htm">lots of added sugar</a> -- to combat the naturally tart taste of cranberries. <a href="http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20318484,00.html">Make your own sauces and relishes instead</a> or try adding them to <a href="http://www.cookinglight.com/food/in-season/in-season-cranberries-00400000003332/">pies, cobblers or other festive baked goods</a>.

  • Sweet Potatoes

<strong>Why we love them:</strong> That bright orange hue is a good sign that antioxidants abound. Sweet potatoes are particularly rich in beta-carotene and vitamins A and C, beneficial for fighting off colds and dull winter skin. They're also a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/november-superfoods_n_2059514.html">good source of fiber and potassium</a>. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> Skip the <a href="http://www.bonappetit.com/blogsandforums/blogs/badaily/2011/11/top-10-least-healthy-thanksgiv.html">marshmallow-topped casseroles</a>, please. Try sweets in an alternative to those creamy, buttery mashed potatoes you're used to having at Thanksgiving. Or switch things up completely by roasting them or serving them pureed into soup.

  • Brussels Sprouts

<strong>Why we love them:</strong> One of our <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/29/healthy-food-healthiest-list_n_1636409.html#slide=1162135">healthiest foods of all time</a>, Brussels sprouts are <a href="http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/foods/cruciferous/">in the same cruciferous family</a> as broccoli, cabbage, kale and other beloved healthy greens that seem to offer some protection against certain cancers. They're <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/05/superfoods_n_1184465.html#s589596&title=Brussels_Sprouts">loaded with fiber</a>, low in calories and <a href="http://www.self.com/health/blogs/healthyself/2011/10/brussels-sprouts-theyre-tastie.html">packed with vitamin C</a>. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> Roast 'em with a bit of olive oil, or <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/05/superfoods_n_1184465.html#s589596&title=Brussels_Sprouts">try slicing them thin into a winter slaw</a>, Keri Gans, registered dietitian and author of "The Small Change Diet", told HuffPost in January.

  • Squash

<strong>Why we love them:</strong> Acorn, butternut and other winter squashes add a sweet flavor without many calories. All are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, just like similarly-hued sweet potatoes. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> Like pumpkin and sweet potatoes, squash can make for a cozy starter <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/22/-butternut-squash-soup_n_1986835.html">pureed into a soup</a>. Or, try <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/november-superfoods_n_2059514.html#slide=1709888">roasting squash and serving with a drizzle of maple syrup</a>, Angela Ginn, R.D., L.D.N., C.D.E., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, suggested earlier this month.

  • Cinnamon

<strong>Why we love it:</strong> One of the staple flavors of fall, this <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/23/spices_n_1166877.html">holiday spice</a> packs powerful health benefits. It contains 4 grams of fiber per tablespoon and may stop you from indulging in richer sweets by quelling that sweet tooth. There's some evidence to support <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/08/healthy-herbs-spices-healthiest_n_2089007.html#slide=1732510">cinnamon helping people with diabetes and high cholesterol</a>, to boot. <strong>How to enjoy it:</strong> You'll find it in a number of classic Thanksgiving recipes, including some made with other superfoods on our list, like <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/roasted-sweet-potatoes-with-honey-butter-recipe/index.html">roasted sweet potatoes</a> or <a href="http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20439608,00.html">apple pie</a>.

  • Pumpkin

<strong>Why we love them: </strong>More bright orange spotted on the table! Pumpkin, like sweet potatoes and squash, is high in vitamin A and beta-carotene, for healthy vision and immunity, and has also been <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/october-superfoods_n_1930091.html#slide=1587398">linked to a longer life</a>. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> If you're choosing between pies, pumpkin's actually a safer bet than pecan, at least, but it can still be <a href="http://www.fitsugar.com/Comparing-Nutritional-Value-Pecan-Pie-vs-Pumpkin-Pie-12068409">high in fat and sugar</a>. Snack on <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/october-superfoods_n_1930091.html#slide=1587398">roasted pumpkin seeds</a> for a dose of healthy fats before the big meal or try it <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/27/quick--easy-pumpkin-soup_n_1060080.html">pureed into soup</a> for a festive starter.

  • Apples

<strong>Why we love them:</strong> The quintessential fall fruit is packed with fiber, which makes you feel full on fewer calories. Ursolic acid, found in the skin of apples, has been <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/health-benefits-apples_n_1855590.html#slide=1470195">linked to lower risk of obesity</a>, and apples may also help ward off diabetes, memory problems <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/health-benefits-apples_n_1855590.html">and even cancer</a>. <strong>How to enjoy them:</strong> You're likely to find an apple pie somewhere among your Thanksgiving celebrations, which can be heavy on the fat and sugar. Instead, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/04/september-superfoods_n_1828853.html#slide=1426696">whip up an easy baked apple</a> with a little cinnamon and apple juice, Kimberly Altman, R.D., of Pritikin Longevity Center, told HuffPost in September.

  • Red Wine

<strong>Why we love it:</strong> A glass of red contains resveratrol, a compound found in red grapes with antioxidant properties that seems to offer <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/19/red-wine-health_n_1018934.html">anti-aging and heart-health benefits</a>. Not to mention, moderate drinkers seem to experience a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/25/alcohol-quality-of-life-moderate-consumption_n_1620104.html">higher quality of life</a>. <strong>How to enjoy it:</strong> In moderation, of course. That means <a href="http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/Publications/DietaryGuidelines/2010/PolicyDoc/Chapter3.pdf">one glass for women and up to two for men</a>, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

love crimes
Love hurts.

These misdeeds and misdemeanors are stranger than romantic fiction.

After a bad breakup, feelings of love can quickly turn to hatred. You say things you don?t mean and wish for things you don?t actually want. But what happens when a person becomes so livid that bitter hypotheticals become actual actions??Some strange tales prove that all is not fair ? or sane, for that matter ? in love and war.

Love Explosion
While flying to Dallas, Christopher Shell?s plane was turned around and boarded by a SWAT team--that were coming for him. Shell?s ex-girlfriend had phoned in a bomb threat, saying he possessed liquid explosives. Fortunately, Shell was quickly cleared, but the ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend were brought into custody soon after.

Below The Belt
A couple days post-breakup, Indiana woman Christina Reber stormed into her ex-boyfriend?s apartment, hit him on the head, then grabbed his scrotum, "squeezing as hard as she could" until it was almost completely severed from the victim?s body. Afterward, he was able to seek medical attention at--no joke--Ball Memorial Hospital.

What A Long, Strange Road Trip It's Been
In 2007, astronaut Lisa Nowak allegedly drove nonstop from Orlando to Texas in order to confront her ex-lover?s new girlfriend, Claudia Shipman, and informed she had worn a diaper in order to avoid any bathroom stops. Upon arrival, she disguised herself and attempted to kidnap Shipman who managed to get away, leading to Nowak?s arrest.

The 90-Cent Car
When British shock jock Tim Shaw speculated on-air that he would leave his family for pin-up girl Jodie Marsh, he didn?t suspect that his wife Hayley was listening. Mrs. Shaw sought revenge in the form of an auction for his $45,000 Lotus Esprit Turbo sports car via eBay, as its registration was in her name. Not only did she sell it in 5 minutes, she let the luxury vehicle go for a mere 50 pence (90 cents).

"Crazy Love" Story
Perhaps one of the most infamous bizarre crimes of love is that of Burt Pugach and Linda Riss. The pair dated in the 1950s, but Riss found out that Pugach was married and left him. Pugach didn't?take the news well;?he hired someone to throw acid in Riss? face and leaving her disfigured and blind. After Pugach?s conviction, prison sentence and release 14 years later, the two actually reconciled and have now been married several decades.

US abortions fall 5 pct, biggest drop in a decade

(AP) ? U.S. abortions fell 5 percent during the recession and its aftermath in the biggest one-year decrease in at least a decade, perhaps because women are more careful to use birth control when times are tough, researchers say.

The decline, detailed on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, came in 2009, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Both the number of abortions and the abortion rate dropped by the same percentage.

Some experts theorize that some women believed they couldn't afford to get pregnant.

"They stick to straight and narrow ... and they are more careful about birth control," said Elizabeth Ananat, a Duke University assistant professor of public policy and economics who has researched abortions.

While many states have aggressively restricted access to abortion, most of those laws were adopted in the past two years and are not believed to have played a role in the decline.

Abortions have been dropping slightly over much of the past decade. But before this latest report, they seemed to have pretty much leveled off.

Nearly all states report abortion numbers to the federal government, but it's voluntary. A few states ? including California, which has the largest population and largest number of abortion providers ? don't send in data. While experts estimate there are more than 1 million abortions nationwide each year, the CDC counted about 785,000 in 2009 because of incomplete reporting.

To come up with reliable year-to-year comparisons, the CDC used the numbers from 43 states and two cities ? those that have been sending in data consistently for at least 10 years. The researchers found that abortions per 1,000 women of child-bearing age fell from about 16 in 2008 to roughly 15 in 2009. That translates to nearly 38,000 fewer abortions in one year.

Mississippi had the lowest abortion rate, at 4 per 1,000 women of child-bearing age. The state also had only a couple of abortion providers and has the nation's highest teen birth rate. New York, second to California in number of abortion providers, had the highest abortion rate, roughly eight times Mississippi's.

Nationally since 2000, the number of reported abortions has dropped overall by about 6 percent and the abortion rate has fallen 7 percent.

By all accounts, contraception is playing a role in lowering the numbers.

Some experts cite a government study released earlier this year suggesting that about 60 percent of teenage girls who have sex use the most effective kinds of contraception, including the pill and patch. That's up from the mid-1990s, when fewer than half were using the best kinds.

Experts also pointed to the growing use of IUDs, or intrauterine devices, T-shaped plastic sperm-killers that a doctor inserts into the uterus. A study released earlier this year by the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization that does research on reproductive health, showed that IUD use among sexually active women on birth control rose from less than 3 percent in 2002 to more than 8 percent in 2009.

IUDs essentially prevent "user error," said Rachel Jones, a Guttmacher researcher.

Ananat said another factor may be the growing use of the morning-after pill, a form of emergency contraception that has been increasingly easier to get. It came onto the market in 1999 and in 2006 was approved for non-prescription sale to women 18 and older. In 2009 that was lowered to 17.

Underlying all this may be the economy, which was in recession from December 2007 until June 2009. Even well afterward, polls showed most Americans remained worried about anemic hiring, a depressed housing market and other problems.

You might think a bad economy would lead to more abortions by women who are struggling. However, John Santelli, a Columbia University professor of population and family health, said: "The economy seems to be having a fundamental effect on pregnancies, not abortions."

More findings from the CDC:

? The majority of abortions are performed by the eighth week of pregnancy, when the fetus is about the size of a lima bean.

? White women had the lowest abortion rate, at about 8.5 per 1,000 women of child-bearing age; the rate for black women was about four times that. The rate for Hispanic women was about 19 per 1,000.

? About 85 percent of those who got abortions were unmarried.

? The CDC identified 12 abortion-related deaths in 2009.

'Macho' Camacho might be taken off life support

Image: Hector CamachoAFP-Getty Images file

Hector Camacho weighs in at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas before a bout with Oscar de la Hoya in 1997.

By Danica Coto

updated 1:35 p.m. ET Nov. 21, 2012

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Hector "Macho" Camacho was clinging to life Wednesday after being shot in the face while in a car, with doctors and his family expected to decide whether to remove the former boxing champion from life support.

Doctors initially had said Camacho was in critical, but stable condition and expected to survive after he was shot Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

"He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life," Torres told The Associated Press outside the hospital in the Puerto Rican capital.

Torres said doctors were trying to determine the boxer's level of brain activity.

The specialists will then consult with other doctors and Camacho's mother, who flew in Wednesday from New York, to discuss whether he should be removed from life support, said Ismael Leandry, a longtime friend and former manager who was also at the hospital.

"We just have to wait to see if `Macho' gets better. It's a hard battle," Leandry told AP.

Torres said Camacho's mother, Maria, spent about 20 minutes with her son, one of the most dynamic boxing personalities of his era, and was expected to return for a second visit on Wednesday night.

"His mother came and she is devastated," he said. "She knows the prognosis is not at all favorable."

A godson, Widniel Adorno, said the family has discussed the possibility of organ donation but no final decision has been made.

The 50-year-old Camacho was outside a bar in a parked Ford Mustang with a friend when he was shot in the face. The friend, identified as 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed. Police said two assailants fled in an SUV but no arrests have been made and no motive has been disclosed.

Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, where doctors initially said the bullet passed through his jaw and lodged in his shoulder. Torres said the bullet damaged three of the four main arteries in his neck and fractured two vertebrae, which could leave him paralyzed if he were to survive.

Steve Tannenbaum, who has also represented Camacho in the past, had been told earlier by friends at the hospital that the boxer would make it.

"This guy is a cat with nine lives. He's been through so much," he said. "If anybody can pull through it will be him."

Friends and family members waited anxiously at the hospital, fondly recalling Camacho's high-energy personality and his powerful skills in the ring.

"He was like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," said former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a fellow Puerto Rican who grew up and trained with Camacho in New York.

Camacho has been considered one of the more controversial figures in boxing, but also popular among fans and those who worked in the sport.

"The Macho Man was a promoter's dream," renowned promoter Don King told AP. "He excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style. He was a nice, amiable guy away from the ring."

King had promoted Camacho but was caught off guard by news of the attack on the former champion. "What a tragedy this is," he said. "I'm very sorry for Hector and his family. My prayers go out to him."

The fighter's last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by unanimous decision. He last fought in May 2010, losing to Saul Duran. Tannenbaum said they were looking at a possible bout in 2013.

"We were talking comeback even though he is 50," he said. "I felt he was capable of it."

Camacho was born in Bayamon, one of the cities that make up the San Juan metropolitan area

He left Puerto Rico as a child and grew up mostly in New York's Harlem neighborhood, one of the reasons he later earned the nickname "the Harlem Heckler."

He went on to win super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.

Camacho has fought other high-profile bouts in his career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending what was that former champ's final comeback attempt.

Camacho has a career record of 79-6-3.

In recent years, he has divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida, appearing regularly on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube. In San Juan, he had been living in the beach community of Isla Verde, where he would obligingly pose for photos with tourists who recognized him on the street, said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a neighbor and friend.

"We all know what Macho Camacho has done, but in the last couple of months he hasn't been in any trouble," Callejas said as he kept vigil outside the hospital. "He has been taking it easy. He's been upbeat."

Drug, alcohol and other problems have trailed Camacho since the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

His wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce several years ago.

Associated Press writers Ben Fox in San Juan, Puerto Rico and David Skretta in Kansas City contributed to this report.

Real estate consultant CBRE gung ho about PHL business ...

Real estate consultant CB Richard Ellis Philippines on Tuesday said there are no signs of a slow down in property development with prospects for next year definitely on a positive track.

?

"We are looking at sustained growth and success,? CBRE chair Rick Santos told reporters in a briefing in Makati City.

?

?The challenge now is how to cope with this unprecedented success," said Santos.

?

This is the "best real estate market in the last 20 years," he added.

?

In the office and commercial sector, the Philippines is holding a unique position in Southeast Asia with the phenomenal growth of business process outsourcing industry, according to CBRE.

?

"The Philippines is one of the top BPO providers in the world, surpassing India in voice operations, and second in non-voice," Santos said.

?

Another plus factor is that there is a lot of room for growth in BPO, particularly in software and web graphic development, information technology and engineering services, and healthcare, CBRE claimed.?

?

"The Philippines is one of the most cost-effective outsourcing destinations in Asia... Manila is now a strategic location for multinational companies and banks, as it supports and runs the world's businesses out of the Philippines," Santos noted.

?

What drives the BPO industry, and would continue to do so, are the large pool of talents, competitive labor rates, stable infrastructure, favorable business environment, and good government stewardship led by the Board of Investment and Philippine Economic Zone Authority, said CBRE vice chair Joey Radovan.
?

What government must do to sustain the industry is focus on educating talents to meet supply issues, continue developing infrastructure and strengthen the telecommunications component, and encourage the construction of more buildings.

?

Demand from the high-end residential market will continue in 2013, Santos said, noting however, that developers will start shifting toward the mid-income market?

?

But Santos said while demand for the high-end residential market will be sustained in 2013, developers will focus more on the mid-income market within the P45,000 to P80,000 per square meter range.

?

This, Santos claimed, reflects on the demand from a growing population of families and young professionals thriving on record-low interest rates.

?

"The confidence in the Philippines from an investment standpoint is very high and will pervade in 2013," he added. ? VS, GMA News

On November 15, leading non-profit and political influencers, gathered for a poignant evening of networking and discussion focused on young black philanthropy

NEW YORK, New York ?There was no doubt where the philanthropic influencers of color were last Thursday evening. Hosted by Friends of Ebonie, with in-kind support from UPTOWN Magazine, COVERGIRL Queen Collection and CIROC vodka, Defining Black Philanthropy drew more than 80 young professionals of color to ImageNation RAW SPACE in Harlem for a mixer and panel discussion promoting civic engagement.

Following an hour of mixing and mingling, the panel discussion took attendees on an interactive journey through the world giving.? Led by moderator Jovian Irvin, Teach for America executive and Official Chasemaster for Janelle Monae?s Wondaland Arts Society, the discussion opened with a framing question to the audience: How often do you give?? "The core of philanthropy is not just giving, but giving in a strategic and meaningful way,? began panelist Nubia Murray, Senior Associate of Philanthropic Initiatives at JP Morgan Chase.? It was Democratic Finance Committee chair, Mike Muse who enlightened the audience to the power of philanthropy, "Philanthropy is the gateway to power. We [African Americans] are being left out of the conversation.? Being a giver now creates social currency and giving gives you the power to make requests.?? The panel also focused heavily on influence, especially the popular influence of social media.? As attendees live tweeted highlights of the conversation using the hashtag, #DefiningYBP, panelist, Amanda Ebokosia of the GEM Project, reminded the audience that 28% of the active Twitter demographic is African American.? ?You don't have to have one million followers or a big title to have a voice,? Muse shared on social media influence.? Irvin fittingly ended the discussion by encouraging attendees to be proactive with their time and resources, ?figure out where you are uniquely positioned to give.?? The panel also received artistic giving advice from Virginia Almendarez, Director of Individual Giving at The Apollo Theater.

The evening concluded with the opportunity for guests to engage with five New York-based non-profits looking to build relationships with new diverse volunteers.? Organizations included: New York Needs You, Generation Schools, The Apollo Theater?s Young Patrons Program, Girls Write Now and Figure Skating in Harlem.? Defining Young Black Philanthropy was also a donation site for The 24th Annual New York Cares Coat Drive; collecting a number of coats and warm outerwear for needy New Yorkers.

How was young black philanthropy defined, you ask? Friends of Ebonie Founder and President, Ebonie Johnson Cooper summarizes, "Young black philanthropy is all of who we are. It is our social influence, our culture and how we engage with our communities.? ? View more photos from the event here.

Thanksgiving Kicks Off An Estimated $586 Billion Holiday Shopping ...

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL In two days, many Americans will be eating turkey with the fixings and watching football. Thanksgiving has historically preceded Black Friday, when consumers' voracious appetites move from the dinner table to the ?shopping malls.

Thanksgiving Is the New Black...Friday

For many years, the holiday shopping frenzy started on the day after Thanksgiving, dubbed Black Friday. Recently, retailers have been taking an ever-larger slice out of Thursday. According to CNN, this year shopping will start earliest at Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and Toys R Us, who open their doors at 8 p.m. local time -- earlier than they opened last year. Target (NYSE:TGT) opens at 9 p.m.

About.com provides a long list of retail stores that will also be open on Thanksgiving, many which will remain open all night and into Black Friday. Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD), The Gap (NYSE:GPS), Aeropostale (NYSE:ARO), Chico?s (NYSE:CHS), Nike (NYSE:NKE), Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), and Sony (NYSE:SNE) are among many stores that will have retail locations open at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Others like Crocs (NASDAQ:CROX), Tumi (NYSE:TUMI), Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (NASDAQ:RMCF), and Hot Topic (NASDAQ:HOTT) will raise their shutters at 10 p.m.

And what will consumers be buying as gifts for this year's holiday season?

Toys R Us?s yearly Fabulous 15 list highlights the spending season?s hottest toys. Among them are Nintendo?s (PINK:NTDOY) Wii U, LeapFrog?s (NYSE:LF) LeapPad2 Explorer, Mattel?s (NASDAQ:MAT) Fisher-Price Jake and the Never Land Pirates Jake?s Musical Pirate Ship Bucky, and Hasbro?s (NASDAQ:HAS) revamped Furby doll.

(Are you as terrified about the return of Furby as I am? Learn all you can in The Most Annoying Toy of All Time Is Back!)

Time points out that two-thirds of the items on this list were priced above $50, with seven toys over $100. Most of the items on Wal-Mart?s top toy list are above $50 as well.

One particularly interesting item on this list is the Tabeo, a 7-inch tablet developed by Toys R US specially for kids. Tabeo runs Google?s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS, is preloaded with popular games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rug, and -- with a $159 price-tag -- it offers parents a fiscally less risky option than letting their small children play with their $330 Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad Minis.

Moving to grown-ups, let?s take a look at Amazon?s (NASDAQ:AMZN) list of the most popular products ordered as gifts to see what will be stuffing this season?s stockings. Amazon?s own Kindle Fire HD is the most ordered item on the online shopping hub?s electronics list, followed by Kindle Paperwhite, a product that has been plagued since its September release by shipping delays.

Online retailers have inevitably changed the nature of holiday shopping, as noted by AOL Daily Finance. Back in 2005, Shop.org, the e-commerce branch of the National Retail Federation, branded the start of the week following Black Friday as Cyber Monday. The online marketplace for holiday shopping thus became a lucrative venue for retailers -- so much so that this year, as more consumers are expected to do their Christmas shopping online, more retailers are offering the same Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday in-store deals simultaneously online.

China's power transfer grinds on amid indifference

Peter Parks / AFP - Getty Images

Chinese President Hu Jintao is seen speaking at the opening of the 18th Communist Party Congress on a television in a subway train in Shanghai on Nov. 8.

By Ian Williams, NBC News

BEIJING -- I arrived in Beijing for what the Global Times, a Chinese newspaper, described as ?one of the biggest political events in history.?

?Are you watching?? I asked my driver on the way in from the airport. He looked at me and laughed. ?Why would I watch that?? he replied.

A little later I settled down in my hotel bar over a glass of Great Wall cabernet sauvignon.? ?Are you watching the Congress?? I asked my server. Again that quizzical look. ?Oh, I don?t care about that,? she replied, before slipping behind the bar and resuming whatever she was doing on her mobile phone, which judging by her concentration she did care about very much.

The 18th Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has begun with great pomp and ceremony in the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square. It is important -- a once-in-a-decade leadership change at a time when the country is facing enormous challenges, from a faltering economy to rampant corruption that goes to the core of the party.

China launches once-in-a-decade changing of guard

But among many Chinese, away from the stuffy heart of this city (from which carrier pigeons have been banned, incidentally, as a security precaution), the meeting might as well be taking place on the moon, among green aliens with spiky heads.

That's how relevant it seems to them.

The official media has given it blanket coverage, while at the same time trying to limit discussion in China's vibrant social media -- slowing internet speeds and even blocking the Chinese translation for the 18th Congress from search engines.

Aside from the pigeon ban, taxis are required to keep their back windows locked, presumably to prevent the distribution of subversive pamphlets, and tiny remote-controlled aircraft have been outlawed.

24 hours after President Barack Obama was re-elected to the White House, the world's other major power, China, began the very different process of choosing its new leader. It happens once every ten years, and lasts just a week. And in case there was any doubt, the ruling Communist Party began by pledging never to have Western democracy. NBC's Angus Walker reports.

Still, the party ?will continue to inject vigor to national politics,? declared the Global Times at the weekend.

?Vigor? isn?t the first world that comes to mind when you see the line up of gray men (you?ll be hard pressed to find many woman near the top of the CPC) in gray suites, gathering mostly to dutifully endorse decisions already made.

Throwback: China's ex-president flexes power broker muscle in Beijing

Much of the proceedings are behind closed doors and the main qualification for advancement in the party is to not the rock the boat. Opinions are dangerous; flamboyance can be fatal to a career in the CPC.

Diego Azubel / EPA

The party is expected to use the highly orchestrated event to persuade the nation's 1.3 billion people that it can provide another 10 years of economic growth and social stability while curbing corruption and nepotism.

The report from the retiring party boss and head of state, Hu Jintao, which kicked off the Congress, hailed as a masterpiece by Chinese newspapers, was of such length and mind-boggling tedium that initially it left analysts struggling to figure what precisely whether it was reformist, reactionary, liberal or conservative.

Probably all of the above.

Just ahead of Congress, I had embarked on a journey across the Beijing to test opinion. It was hardly scientific, but I figured I'd at least get a sense of what ordinary Chinese were thinking.

I started by bike in the narrow alleyways around the surviving hutongs in an older part of the city.

Here the residents are older too, and a question from a foreigner about the Communist Party, produces an embarrassed wave of the hand, or provokes a speedy retreat behind closed doors. Ordinary Chinese of a certain age have seen how capricious and brutal the party can be and know better than to openly discuss politics with a foreigner.

Despite deadly week, Communist Party says Tibetans 'feel very happy'

An exception was an elderly man who stood bold upright and recited how China's new leaders would build a strong and prosperous country. But what of Xi Jinping, the man soon to be anointed leader. What does he stand for, how exactly will he do that, I asked. The door swung open and he too was gone.

I approached a man barbecuing some skewered lamb. He claimed not to understand my interpreter, though did I detect an extra touch of aggression with those skewers at the mention of the party?

I then took a taxi figuring that cabbies everywhere have an opinion. But not this one, shaking his head, waving his hand, and probably wishing his wheezing vehicle had an ejector seat. I pressed on. I know what President Obama listens to on his iPod, I explained, and what Mitt Romney has for breakfast. Did he think Xi Jinping has an iPod?

At that he just burst out laughing, and laughed, and laughed, until he dropped me at a Beijing university, where my luck changed.

While the candidates are scrutinized and skewered by the media in the U.S., China's new leader Xi Jinping remains a man of mystery among his citizens. NBC's Ian Williams reports

Here almost all the youngsters I met had heard of Xi, but professed to know hardly anything about him. What does he stand for? Two young women looked blankly at each other. "We don?t know," they said in unison, as if this was the most stupid question they'd ever heard. Does Xi have kids? I asked another couple. "I don't know," said one. "And I don't care." said the other.

Another young man looked puzzled. "But we don't vote," he said, which I guess goes to the heart of the matter. Why should we care, he seemed to be saying, what's this process got to do with us?

Perhaps out of desperation, I did what a lot of Beijingers are doing these days and went to a fortune teller. He rumbled me immediately, and declared that he didn?t do politics, and that his crystal ball certainly didn't stretch to the Communist Party. "I don't know and I don?t care," he declared.

The party, at least its more perceptive members, do seem to recognize the challenges they -- and China -- face. But the prescription for these ills appears to be more of the same. Its still a brave and lonely voice that will call for greater openness, transparency and accountability.

CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports on China's selection of new leaders to meet public calls for better government and give the economy a boost.

The congress will end with the unveiling of the new leadership. Yet in spite of acres of fevered analysis from China-watchers, the reality is that we know virtually nothing about what Xi Jinping thinks about anything, let alone the secretive process by which he was selected.

Is he another grey and cautious techocrat or a closet reformer? Take your pick. We can all be experts in the face of the party's secrecy.

Embassy ballots give Chinese a taste of democracy ahead of power transfer

On paper at least the Communist Party has 82 million members, but only a tiny clique make the real decisions, and there is an enormous gulf -- vast and growing -- between them and the people it is supposed to represent, a gulf filled increasingly with cynicism and distrust.

Peter Parks / AFP - Getty Images

President Hu Jintao, seen on a television in a motorcycle repair shop in Shanghai, called for stepped-up political reform and a revamped economic model as the Communist Party opened a historic congress to usher in a new slate of leaders.

China has changed dramatically since the party last changed its leaders a decade ago -- from the economy to the thriving social media that's such a thorn in the side of the leadership, and where the timing of the leadership change, so soon after the raucous U.S. election has provoked many an uncomfortable (for the party) comparison.

The dynamism elsewhere in China is in stark contrast with the ossified spectacle on display this week in the Great Hall. Those carrier pigeons are the least of the party?s problems.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 08, 2012

More consumers are getting auto loans with terrible credit despite economic conditions. For consumers who are in the market for a new or used car; they should be encouraged. There?s a new car financing service that?s supplying terrible credit auto loans on a national level.

During the worst economic downturn in America since the fantastic depression auto lenders were discouraging people with terrible credit to apply for auto financing. At one point the average credit score for car loan approval reached 776. A recent study released by Experian Automotive shows that the trends are changing.

With more people being accepted for a terrible credit auto loan, buyers are flooding the market, bringing the average credit score required to buy a car down to a ?near normal? rate. The average credit rating is now closer to 760 which mirrors very similar conditions in 2008.

According to Melinda Zabritski who is the director of automotive credit at Experian Automotive, ?A few years ago, it could have been much more hard to get an auto loan,?.A lot of lenders who specialize in subprime financing might not even have had the funds to lend.? But times have changed, she says: ?It?s a excellent time to buy a car.?

Despite the condition of a persons credit more loans are being approved by auto lenders which means a consumer or student looking for a car loan with terrible credit will more easily find one today then ever before. Here?s some of the latest trends according to Experian Automotive.

Monthly payments have been lowered an average of 4.6% on new vehicles and 9% on used vehicles. Auto loan terms have been lengthened to lower monthly payments. The average dollar amount loaned to consumers for a new or used vehicle has gone up nearly $ 400. Buyers with terrible credit scores are being approved more often. Auto lenders are tending to make more loans in general as the demand for cars has increased significantly.

The upside to the auto lending industry is that as they have increased the amount of loans given they are tending to also receive more consistent payments for those loans then ever before.

With recent changes companies like Complete Auto Loans are finding new ways to extend affordable auto loan rates to various types of credit history.

Sandra Ferguson of Seattle says, ?I was finally able to get approved for an auto loan after my bank denied me. What a fantastic company to work with?from the first step to the last, they were there the whole time.?

The normalization of Apple

There's been a lot of great stuff written about the recent Apple management shake-up that saw Scott Forstall removed as head of iOS and his portfolio re-distributed to Jony Ive (design), Craig Frederighi (software), and Eddy Cue (services).

That last one in particular, by Michael Lopp, talks to the important of disruption is vital to success.

The word that worried me the most in the press release was in the first sentence. The word was ?collaboration?. Close your eyes and imagine a meeting with Steve Jobs. Imagine how it proceeds and how decisions are made. Does the word collaboration ever enter your mind? Not mine. I?m just sitting there on pins and needles waiting for the guy to explode and rip us to shreds because we phoned it in on a seemingly unimportant icon.

Consensus is said to be the opposite of leadership, but collaboration is a tool to achieve normalization. Under Steve Jobs, the power of personality literally revolutionized the consumer electronic world. Under Scott Forstall, the power of personality literally changed the mobile experience of a generation. Yet with incredible highs come incredible lows. Success, like everything, has a price. And that price is equal and opposite failure. MobileMe, iOS 6 Maps, Siri reliability -- the list is well known.

Absent Steve Jobs, and now absent Scott Forstall, we may have lost Apple's highest highs and the greatest greats. But we may also have lost the lowest lows and worst of the worsts that came with them. Instead of Star Wars under Lucas, we'll have Star Wars under Disney. Instead of Kubrick, we'll have Pixar.

Just like Steve Jobs did with product grids, Tim could has now done with people. There will still be great things, and still be terrible things, but the chances of both will be lessened by collaboration and committee.

Scientists discover possible building blocks of ancient genetic systems in Earth's most primitive organisms

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Scientists believe that prior to the advent of DNA as Earth's primary genetic material, early forms of life used RNA to encode genetic instructions. What sort of genetic molecules did life rely on before RNA?

The answer may be AEG, a small molecule that when linked into chains forms a hypothetical backbone for peptide nucleic acids, which have been hypothesized as the first genetic molecules. Synthetic AEG has been studied by the pharmaceutical industry as a possible gene silencer to stop or slow certain genetic diseases. The only problem with the theory is that up to now, AEG has been unknown in nature.

A team of scientists from the United States and Sweden announced that they have discovered AEG within cyanobacteria which are believed to be some of the most primitive organisms on Earth. Cyanobacteria sometimes appear as mats or scums on the surface of reservoirs and lakes during hot summer months. Their tolerance for extreme habitats is remarkable, ranging from the hot springs of Yellowstone to the tundra of the Arctic.

"Our discovery of AEG in cyanobacteria was unexpected," explains Dr. Paul Alan Cox, co-author of the paper that appeared in the journal PLOS ONE. The American team members are based at the Institute for Ethnomedicine in Jackson Hole, and serve as adjunct faculty at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

"While we were writing our manuscript," Cox says, "we learned that our colleagues at the Stockholm University Department of Analytical Chemistry had made a similar discovery, so we asked them to join us on the paper."

To determine how widespread AEG production is among cyanobacteria, the scientists analyzed pristine cyanobacterial cultures from the Pasteur Culture Collection of Paris, France. They also collected samples of cyanobacteria from Guam, Japan, Qatar, as well as in the Gobi desert of Mongolia, the latter sample being collected by famed Wyoming naturalist Derek Craighead. All were found to produce AEG.

Professor Leopold Ilag and his student Liying Jiang at Stockholm University's Department of Analytical Chemistry analyzed the same samples and came up with identical results: cyanobacteria produce AEG. While the analysis is certain, its significance for studies of the earliest forms of life on Earth remains unclear. Does the production of AEG by cyanobacteria represent an echo of the earliest life on Earth?

"We just don't have enough data yet to draw that sort of conclusion," reports Cox. "However the pharmaceutical industry has been exploring synthetic AEG polymers for potential use in gene silencing, so I suspect we have much more to learn."
