Essential Tips In Making The Right Pick Among Teaching Agencies

There are a lot of teaching agencies sprouting from nowhere these days, with education having consistent demand for teaching personnel, the supply of teaching staff has proven to be a lucrative business. There are some which are purely in it for the money, while most are truly dedicated in helping learning institutions and teaching job-seekers. If you do not want to get scammed by bogus teaching agencies, provided here are tips that can surely help.

In the UK, there is such a thing as the Department for Education's Quality Mark. This special mark is given to teaching agencies that uphold the highest quality of standards in supplying skilfully competent teachers to their client schools, as well as help new teachers find the teaching positions that are perfectly suitable to their academic credentials and other requirements. This leads to the first tip which is to check if the agency has accreditation.

If you're coming from abroad, it's best if the agency has a program that will help you before your arrival, hence the second tip. Reputable teaching agencies help in their teachers' visa concerns, living arrangements and even in opening bank accounts. If your agency has provision for all these things then you're in good hands.

Third tip is to make sure that the agency knows your specific requirements for the teaching jobs that you want. It's rarely a good sign if the agency informs you that it lined you up for a position that's not at all what you have in mind. Basically what this means is that, it's more intent on serving its own interest instead of yours. Though it's great to have a job right away, you don't want to be forced into a situation that may compromise you as a professional.

Fourth tip is to conduct a background check on the agency's client schools. The number of schools in its listing is not a solid indication that the agency's really good, but it will be an advantage to you if you know its breadth because it can determine the rate of success the agency may have in finding the appropriate teaching job for you. Also, make the Internet your friend; it's the best source of performance reviews from previous clients. You don't need to just take the agency's word for it because naturally its desire is to draw more clients to their business. Through the World Wide Web, you can easily check if all the agency's claims are true.

If you do not want to get scammed by bogus teaching agencies, provided here are tips that can surely help.

How Much Does a Physical Therapist Make? - Exercise Science Guide

Physical therapist discusses salary and job outlook with his patient.

Due to the increasing healthcare industry need, salaries for accredited physical therapists have grown in the past decade. Generally, you can count on a profession in physical therapy to make you a very good income considering the average salary is approximately $60,000 per year. Though you should know that there are substantial differences in salaries based upon experience. How much you will earn depends primarily on the amount of expertise you have, your geographic location, and the facility where you?re employed.

Initially, the 1st physical therapy job you have will most likely earn you a salary somewhere in between $25,000 and $35,000 basing on your location. Physical therapists in the sports medicine setting are typically compensated at the lesser end of the spectrum, however people who go into this area assert that the energizing job setting makes it well worth the modest reduction in salary.

By gaining more experience you?ll be earning more and it may be possible to double your salary after a few years into your career as a physical therapist. With a mix of work experience, great location, and a busy practice environment, peak salaries be upwards of $100,000 per year. The best way to figure out what you can look forward to making is to speak with working physical therapists where you live.

The academic prerequisites for this profession are challenging, involving a minimum of 4 years of rigorous scholastic education. Therefore normally, you?ll be asking yourself if there?s going to be an employment opportunity awaiting you upon graduation. Fortunately, the guaranteed answer is yes. This is among the the best careers of the in the last 10 years or so.

Outlook for long term job demand are outstanding. Physical therapists experience among the smallest unemployment numbers of any profession. The need for physical therapy is significant and is anticipated to continuously increase for long term.

What warrants such a high demand for physical therapy? Currently, there are a number of explanations. A big reason is the quickly increasing population age 50 and older. The course of growing older carries with it more occurrences of persistent and incapacitating health issues. With age, even the fittest men and women become more susceptible to unanticipated health conditions and restricted movement or abilities. As many of those born in the 1950?s and before become more elderly, they experience the increased likelihood of consequences related to myocardial infarctions, strokes, brittle bones and worn joints.

People part of the Baby Boomer generation (those born in the 1950?s) have a tendency to be energetic individuals, set out to live a healthy lifestyle as long as achievable. If you go into any fitness center you?ll see that a sizable percentage of members are in their 50?s and 60?s. Paradoxically, this desire for keeping youthful and energetic is a major reason why the demand for sports medicine physical therapists will constantly grow. As exercise and involvement in sports rises, so do strained physiques and sports-related trauma.

On the opposite side of the age range, increasingly more babies will necessitate therapy. Technological innovation is enabling many infants to be given birth to who wouldn?t have stayed alive previously. However, this turns into a higher amount of children born with birth defects, a number of serious. Similarly, as technology preserves more people, survivors of serious mishaps and debilitating issues will require physical therapy rehabilitation. In the corporate setting, more physical therapists are being hired to protect against occupational injuries, as opposed to treating them. Decrease in work productivity as a result of disease and personal injuries sets both the employer and employee back a lot more than the cost of implementing programs to make workers healthy and fit. Medical facilities employ physical therapists to ensure the staff is carrying out their tasks safely and to endorse general health by creating exercise plans.

Rover shoots movie during descent

Watch images taken by Nasa's Curiosity rover as it made its descent to the surface of Mars

Images that the Curiosity rover took of the surface of Mars as it made its historic descent on Monday (GMT) have now been released.

Nasa has provided almost 300 thumbnails from a sequence of pictures that will eventually be run together as a colour hi-def movie.

Visible in the timelapse is the heatshield discarded by the vehicle as it neared the ground.

So too is the dust kicked up by the rover's rocket-powered crane.

It was the crane that finally settled the robot on to the surface.

A signal confirming the Curiosity rover had landed on Mars was received here at mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at 05:32 GMT; 06:32 BST on Monday (22:32 PDT Sunday).

The vehicle - also known as the Mars Science laboratory (MSL) - put down in a deep equatorial depression known as Gale Crater.

Pictures from the Mars Descent Imager (Mardi), even in their thumbnail form, have now allowed engineers to work out Curiosity's precise position on the planet - a latitude of -4.5895 and a longitude of 137.4417.

The full set of high-resolution pictures from Mardi will take some weeks to downlink.

The mission team has also got its best view yet of Mount Sharp, the 5.5km-high peak sitting in the middle of Gale.

This comes from a hazard avoidance camera mounted on the lower-front of the vehicle.

Ordinarily, hazcam pictures are very wide-angle in view and therefore distorted, but image processing software has been used to correct the geometry.

The mountain is the ultimate destination for this $2.5bn (?1.6bn) mission.

Satellite data has indicated that sediments at the base of Mount Sharp were laid down in the presence of abundant water.

Curiosity, with its sophisticated suite of 10 instruments, will study those rocks to try to determine if ancient environments on Mars were ever favourable for life.

On Tuesday, Nasa released the first colour image from the ground, taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (Mahli) instrument. In the distance, the image shows the north wall and rim of Gale Crater.

The image is murky because it was taken through Mahli's removable dust cover which seems to be coated with debris blown onto the camera during the rover's descent.

The space agency had already shown off a spectacular shot acquired not by the rover but of the rover. This came from one of the US space agency's satellites at the Red Planet - the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

MRO played a key role in Monday's landing by recording telemetry from the robot as it approached the ground.

But Nasa also tasked it with trying to get a picture of the new arrival. The rover is seen when still inside its protective shell.

Moments after this image was acquired, the vehicle would have dropped out of the capsule to ride its rocket-powered crane to the base of the crater. The resolution in the picture is such that it is even possible to pick out the discarded heatshield.

The mission team is now in its first full day of Martian operations (Sol 1). One of the key activities will be to deploy Curiosity's high-gain antenna. This unit will allow the vehicle to talk direct to Earth, in addition to relaying data via satellites like MRO.

Another action planned for Sol 1 will be to get a colour shot from the Mars Hand Lens Imager (Mahli).

This camera is mounted on the rover's tool-bearing turret at the end of its robotic arm. The picture, which should be released on Tuesday, ought to give us a real sense of being on Mars.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

Customer Experience Solutions that make Banking Easy for ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Martin | Tuesday, 07 August 2012 02:09 | Word Count: 814

Financial services are services provided by institutions that manage money. Wikipedia defines financial services as ?the economic services provided by the finance industry, which encompasses a broad range of organizations that manage money, including credit unions, banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds, and some government sponsored enterprises.? During the economic recession the financial services industry took a beating as people began to act cautiously with respect to money. As the deposits went down, the customer service became poor leading to low customer satisfaction. Moreover, the introduction of new fees further complicated the situation. As a result, consumers began to change banks or credit card companies for a good banking customer experience and did not stop until they found one.

With the advent of the Internet and its paraphernalia, most customers carry out financial transactions online. Financial service institutions need to keep pace with consumers and offer customer service when and how their consumers demand it since this is the only way to retain customers. Most enterprises often forget the fact that in order to grow and expand they need the support of customers and therefore ensuring good customer experience is of utmost importance. However, most enterprises fail to do so.

Realizing the problems faced by customers with respect to financial institutions many enterprises have come up with intuitive customer experience solutions. These solutions

? ????????Anticipate what consumers want, gives them easier ways to get things done and builds brand loyalty

? ????????Make company-to-consumer connections intelligent, integrated and immersive?across all touch points

? ????????Help B-to-C enterprises get closer to their customers by giving them complete access to information, at any time, from anywhere, through any channel

The customer experience solutions are truly intuitive since it not only changes the way service is delivered to the consumers but also alters the way the consumers receive and react to those services. These solutions truly make banking easy for consumers. However, not just consumers but financial institutions also make gains with these solutions. It helps banks and credit card issuers in customer acquisition, activation, up selling and cross selling of products. Besides, it helps banks and insurance companies in customer support.

With customers playing a dominant role in the success of any enterprise, customer experience solutions have become a vital investment in enhancing the customer experience.

Apple chip designer profits rise

ARM Holdings, the UK company behind the computer chip technology powering Apple's iPhone and iPad, has reported a 23% boost to second-quarter profits.

The Cambridge-based company announced pre-tax profits of ?66.5m on sales of ?135m for the three months to the end of June, beating analysts' forecasts.

Despite Apple's lower-than-forecast profit rise posted on Tuesday, demand for ARM technology in smartphones, computers and TVs remains high.

ARM shares rose nearly 6% on the news.

ARM licenses its technology to chip makers and receives royalty income on its intellectual property.

The company said 2 billion chips had been shipped during the quarter, up 9% year-on-year compared to an industry-wide fall of 4%, while processor royalties grew 14%.

"ARM's royalty revenues continued to outperform the overall semiconductor industry as our customers gained market share within existing markets and launched products which are taking ARM technology into new markets," said the company's chief executive Warren East.

The company said full-year results would be in line with market expectations, in contrast with chip technology companies Intel and Qualcomm, which have reduced forecasts in recent weeks.

There are more marketing channels to get your message heard, and the price of many of them is coming down all the time.

It is these successful business owners that the Small Business Big Marketing team seek out and interview for their small business marketing podcasts. ?

Samsung vies for spotlight ahead of iPhone launch

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest mobile-phone maker, said Friday it plans to show a new mobile device in late August, trying to stay in the consumer spotlight ahead of Apple's expected release of the latest iPhone in September.

The move comes as Samsung is ensnarled in a closely-watched courtroom fight with Apple Inc. over smartphone and tablet patents. Each side is seeking billions of dollars in compensation or royalty payments.

The South Korean company said the new device will be unveiled Aug. 29 in Berlin, two days before Europe's biggest consumer electronics show, IFA. The company declined to give more details.

But analysts said it is likely an update of the Galaxy Note, which has a screen bigger than smartphones but smaller than tablet computers and can be used with a stylus pen.

"It is time for the new Galaxy Note," said Kim Young-chan, an analyst at Shinhan Investment. "Samsung's strategy is to roll out a new product before Apple does, so there will be a new smartphone before the new iPhone."

Analysts expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October and go on worldwide sale during the fourth quarter.

Releasing another mobile product will help Samsung fend off competition from Apple during the fourth quarter. Analysts believe sales of Galaxy S3 smartphones, released in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June, will hit a peak before Apple introduces a new iPhone.

The Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch display that is about twice as large as the iPhone's 3.5-inch screen diagonally. The Note received mixed reviews when it made a debut last year but it took off, becoming one of Samsung's top-selling high-end smartphones along with the Galaxy S.

Samsung sold 7 million of the first generation of Galaxy Note between October and May.

The product launches in the fall will be Samsung and Apple's first following the trial. The U.S. district court in San Jose said the patent trial between Samsung and Apple will last about four weeks from July 30.

PFT: Fitzgerald 'uncomfortable' talking about Canton

Roger GoodellAP

The Summer of Law necessarily will spill into the preseason.

With the Saints and Cardinals squaring off on Sunday night in Canton and the first full night of preseason games coming Thursday, the bounty case will land back in federal court on Friday, August 10, for oral arguments on the league?s effort to obtain a dismissal of the effort to overturn suspensions of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita.

It?s likely that Judge Helen G. Berrigan will render at that time (if not sooner) a ruling as to whether Vilma?s one-year suspension will be lifted until the lawsuit ends.? She also may issue from the bench on Friday, August 10, a ruling on whether the suspensions will be upheld or overturned.

A flurry of legal filings landed in court on Friday, August 3; the New Orleans Times-Picayune has a summary of the filings but we?ll defer comment until we can analyze all of the documents.? (First, we have to get all of the documents.)

The paperwork was filed a day before Commissioner Roger Goodell came the closest he ever has to acknowledging that the process of paying players for inflicting injury constitutes a bounty program, even if the hits are clean and legal and there was no specific intent to injure.? ?Well, the No. 1 thing is when you reward players for injuring other opponents, that?s a bounty,? Goodell said. ?That?s not pay for performance, that?s a bounty.? And that?s what the players and, I believe, [Saints linebackers] Coach [Joe] Vitt said occurred.? And that?s what our evidence indicates.? So when you?re doing that, anything that would target or reward people for injuring other players, that?s not part of football.? That?s not what we?re teaching these kids, and it?s not what we?re going to do in the NFL.?

For reasons still not apparently clear, the league?s prior efforts to characterize the case seemed to focus on the notion that players entered the field of play with a specific plan to injure.? If the NFL had from the get-go said clearly and plainly that:? (1) the Saints offered money for legal hits that resulted in injury; (2) no intent to injure was required or necessary; and (3) the league?s Constitution and Bylaws specifically define such conduct as a ?bounty,? even without specific intent to injure, then maybe there wouldn?t have been so much confusion.

The league?s failure to focus the analysis in such simple terms has allowed the NFLPA and players like Drew Brees to set the agenda by claiming that there was no ?pay for injury? scheme because there was no intent to injure.

The truth is (or at least seems to be) that intent to injure doesn?t matter.

We?ve previously believed that the league shied away from explaining the situation in such simple terms because it could spark a debate regarding whether it?s fair to suspend players for receiving the equivalent of a helmet sticker for doing something they already had an incentive to do ? hit the other guy hard enough to break his will, or one of his bones.

That?s football.? The incentive to hit other players hard will be there regardless of whether the player gets a short stack of $100 bills or a skull-and-crossbones sticker on the back of his helmet.? (Surely, college and high school teams give out stickers for hard, clean hits that knock an opponent out of the game.)

None of this means that the players will or won?t avoid their suspensions via litigation.? Legal disputes routinely are resolved based on a somewhat warped reality of phrases and clauses and concepts.? But we?re hoping that, eventually, the league and the Saints will comes to an agreement as to what this case is really about, and that the fans and the media then can discuss among themselves whether it?s appropriate to hammer the Saints for doing something that every team at nearly every level of the sport does ? rewarding players for clean, legal hits that send those on the receiving end to the sidelines, whether for one play or the rest of the game.

Ernesto at sea in Caribbean; new storm forms in Atlantic

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Ernesto kept on a westerly course in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday and will soon bulk up into a hurricane that may soak Jamaica as it passes by the island, U.S. forecasters said.

Officials in Jamaica issued a tropical storm warning as Ernesto moved in open waters at 18 miles per hour on a predicted track that should keep it at sea until a forecast landfall in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday.

With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, Ernesto on Saturday afternoon was 260 miles south of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and was expected to stay clear of Jamaica and Hispaniola, the mountainous island Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic.

Tropical storm conditions would strike Jamaica on Sunday afternoon, while the southern coasts of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola will see squalls on Saturday, U.S. forecasters said.

Three to 6 inches were expected in Jamaica. Showers and thunderstorms - sometimes severe - were possible on the islands of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire off Venezuela's northern coast.

"The center of Ernesto should pass south of Hispaniola tonight and south of Jamaica on Sunday evening," the U.S. forecasters in Miami said. "Ernesto is forecast to become a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean in a day or two."

Ernesto, which did no reported damage on Friday as it passed over the tiny island of Saint Lucia, would be deemed a hurricane if its winds reach 74 mph.

Forecasters expect Ernesto to move into the southern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday but it was too early to know whether it could disrupt oil and gas operations in the gulf.

U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasters said another tropical storm, called Florence, formed on Saturday in the eastern Atlantic and was moving west in open waters. As of early evening, forecasters said, Florence was about 515 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands.

With maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, Florence was the sixth named storm of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, moving west at 15 mph, and was expected to track westerly before weakening next week.

August and September are usually the most active months of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

Fed wraps up meeting as markets await action

(AP) ? The Federal Reserve concludes its two-day policy meeting Wednesday with a big question looming: Will it take some new action to jolt the U.S. economy out of its slump?

Investors are hoping the Fed will announce another round of bond purchases, known as quantitative easing. The goal is to lower long-term interest rates and encourage more borrowing and spending.

But economists say the Fed is likely to hold off until September to wait and see if job growth and consumer spending to pick up.

U.S. growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent from April through June, down from the 2 percent pace in the first quarter. And consumers spent no more in June than they did in May, even though their income grew by 0.5 percent.

Fed officials have signaled their concern about weakening job growth and consumer spending, which have brought the economy closer to a standstill. And Chairman Ben Bernanke has said the Fed is prepared to take further action if unemployment stays high.

"The weakness of the economy will force them to act," said David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors. "Bernanke has been really straightforward. He has said if the recovery loses momentum and labor market conditions are not improving, we will get more easing."

The Fed could announce an interim step Wednesday. One possibility is it could extend a plan to keep its benchmark interest rate near zero, from late-2014 until to mid-2015. The goal of such a move would be to assure consumers and businesses that they will be able to borrow cheaply well into the future. But it also signals that the Fed expects the economy to stay weak for some time.

The meeting is one of three big events this week that investors and economists will pay close attention to. The European Central Bank meets on Thursday, and the U.S. Labor Department releases the July jobs report on Friday.

Economists forecast that U.S. employers added 100,000 jobs in July. That would be only slightly better than the 75,000 a month from April through June and still down from a healthy 226,000 average in the first three months of the year. The unemployment rate is expected to stay at 8.2 percent.

Worries have also intensified about Europe's debt crisis and whether the U.S. economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget deal. A recession could follow, Bernanke has warned.

The Fed has already pursued two rounds of purchases of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities.

The Fed has also extended a program called Operation Twist. Under this program, the Fed sells short-term Treasurys and buys longer-term Treasurys. The goal is to lower longer-term interest rates.

Even if the Fed launched a third round of bond purchases, few think that further lowering long-term rates would provide much benefit to the U.S. economy. Most businesses and consumers who aren't borrowing now aren't likely to change their minds if rates slipped a bit more.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note is already just above its record low of 1.39 percent, which it touched last week. The national average rate for a new-car loan barely tops 3 percent. And the average on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell below 3.5 percent last week for the first time on records dating back 60 years.

Some regional Fed bank presidents have expressed concern that expanding the Fed's investment portfolio beyond its current record $2.9 trillion to try to lower rates more would heighten the risk of high inflation later.

"Various Fed officials have made it pretty clear they want to do something, but they still have a lot of discussion to go through before they get to a decision," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial in Chicago. "How do you get the biggest bang for the dollar when the ammunition you have left is limited?"

Some analysts have also suggested that the Fed might be reluctant to act aggressively as the November election nears, out of concern it could be seen as affecting the vote.

If the Fed does announce further bond buying, some think the purchases might be divided between Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities. Though at record lows, mortgage rates are still higher than rates on some other loans. Further declines in those rates could help fuel home sales.

Obama congratulates US gymnastics team on win

(AP) ? President Barack Obama congratulated the five members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team Wednesday on their Olympic victory ? and he had some questions about just how they managed to pull off their gold medal performances.

"I told these young ladies as I was congratulating them, how do you not bust your head every time you're on that little balance beam?" Obama said. "I couldn't walk across that balance beam."

Obama telephoned the gymnastics team from Air Force One as he traveled from Washington to Ohio for campaign events.

The president has also been watching some Olympic swimming. He congratulated American swimmer Michael Phelps on becoming the most decorated Olympic athlete ever by winning his 19th medal ? a gold ? in a men's relay Tuesday.

Campaigning in a political battleground state, Obama singled out Olympians from Ohio. And he said the "wonderful thing about the Olympics is that it reminds us that for all our differences, when it comes down to our country, we are Americans first."

Avoiding Olympic spoilers is a sport of its own

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mandy Hauck turned 25 on Wednesday, but she's avoiding Facebook and her happy birthday messages to steer clear of Olympic spoilers about her favorite sport, fencing.

Hauck has also deleted her iPhone apps for CNN and ESPN, opting for news from the London Games the old-fashioned way, via TV coverage that's time-delayed by NBC for prime time.

The network is making live streams of the action available in real time online. Hauck's hanging tough, though, in favor of doing actual work during the day as the marketing communications manager for a software company in Atlanta, a job that requires her to stay on Twitter while she attempts to stay away from its main page and trending topics.

"I enjoy the experience of sitting with my family and friends in front of the television and cheering for the athletes as if they were competing live," said Hauck, a former college fencer who has been following two-time American gold medalist Mariel Zagunis in London. "It's much more entertaining and enjoyable that way!"

It's also incredibly difficult with social media in full flower. Olympic spoilers have people turning off phone alerts, hiding their iPads and shushing co-workers in search of simpler times, when screaming at the TV during nail-biting competition was a sport unto itself.

Pervasive spoilers even solicited an apology from NBC's Olympics executive producer, Jim Bell. He tweeted a mea culpa for a Monday night gaffe, when the network ran a "Today" show teaser with swimmer Missy Franklin showing off her gold medal ? just before the network aired the race where she won it.

While angry tweeters have taken to ? yes, Twitter ? to grouse about spoilers, Paul Redfern at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania has entered what he calls "my Olympic dark period" on social media. That's not an easy thing when your job description includes overseeing social media engagement. He's also the dad of two young kids.

"Watching the prime-time broadcast is a family tradition," he said. "The Summer Olympics are almost always on for part of our vacation and we always gather as a family to watch each evening."

Redfern is leaving the tweeting on behalf of the college to another person in the office for the duration.

Lisa McTigue in Los Angeles is a former competitive swimmer who truly loves sitting down to soak up the Olympics on TV. Unfortunately, she's also an Internet marketing consultant who can't do her job without Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

"All the excitement I have felt for the Olympics in previous years is completely gone," she said. "In previous years, I felt inspired to get back in the pool. This year, that inspiration and excitement is ? meh."

Despite complaints, NBC's corporate owners said Wednesday that they expect to break even on the London games after once predicting they'd take a $200 million loss. On Tuesday night, 38.7 million people tuned in.

Count Rob Holliday among the Olympic traditionalists. He, too, has turned off push alerts and kept Twitter and Facebook use to a minimum. He's also avoiding major online news sites and turns off the radio and TV when anchors issue Olympic spoiler alerts.

"I thought it was a fairly airtight plan," he said. "After jumping through all those technological hoops, I walked in to my daughter's pediatrician's office only to hear a woman say, "'Guess what? Team USA won the gold in women's gymnastics!' Argh!!"

Graduate student Shraddha Sankhe, who's spending the summer in Washington, D.C., as a communications intern for a nonprofit, considers it mission impossible to avoid Olympic spoilers, so she's going with it.

She's been plugging in to social media big time to follow results and watching live feeds online. "It doesn't make sense to wait for the results to be 'seen' on network television a few hours later," Sankhe said. "Internet more than makes up for a cable subscription these days for students like me."

Sankhe caught the opening ceremony live via BBC One using a link forwarded by friends on Twitter.

Olympic purist Jennifer Chang in Saratoga, Calif., can't afford to go dark online due to her communications job for a medical research foundation. But she's curating the Twitter feeds she follows. She's temporarily dumping the ones that are spilling news without spoiler warnings in favor of those using the broadest terms possible to announce results while providing links to details within a tweet.

That, she said, leaves it up to her to link for further news while staying in touch online. "I appreciate that greatly."

Some Twitter fanatics are taking full advantage of filters available on Tweetdeck and other tools used to organize feeds.

Beth Laughlin, a former competitive gymnast, has gone dark on news feeds of all kinds as she intensely follows the sport. But her husband, Will Laughlin, turned out to be the spoiler.

"Halfway through my first cup of coffee, a New York Times alert popped up on my iPad: U.S. women win team gold. The words fell out of my mouth before I knew what they meant or could gulp them back down," he said.

"My wife cocked her head sideways in disgust and said, 'You just ruined it!' She still cheered and cried while watching the events unfold on TV, but it really wasn't the same."
